Disc Brake Chase

Chase Bicycles tease us with a tech looking disc brake set up

Disc brakes for BMX racing, do we need them? Well, no … obviously … but we do need brakes so why shouldn’t they be of the disc variety, what’s wrong with change? Contrary to the always expert opinion you read on Facebook, the disc does have advantages … stopping power for one, raining out, no problem. The ability to ‘feather’ your brake is another, you can save rotational weight on the rear rim and buy that expensive carbon rim you’ve been looking at without fear of brake block damage … BMX is evolving … if it didn’t we’d really have problems.

Of all the companies out there, who are developing disc brakes and other cool stuff for our 20” bikes we were really excited when Chase Bicycles popped up with a prototype disc kit for their high-end frame at the USA BMX Grands this year. The tech rear end of the carbon ACT 1.0 fits beautifully with the machined 120mm disc that the prototype kit allows you to use. You can’t deny that the whole thing is just ‘mouth wateringly’ beautiful!

The problem with just putting a disc kit on a V-Brake designed frame is you’re usually left with the ugly leftover brake mounts or a hole in your expensive frame but Chase have addressed this, BMX Racing Group’s Pete Dylewski told us “Also included with the kit is the brake bolts and frame fillers for the ACT 1.0 Carbon frame to give you the cleanest look possible.”

Short of a specific disc designed frame we think the solution works really well … in fact, when we first saw the video of the bike we wondered had Chase produced a prototype frame!

Now the bad news … “Production and price info. is not available at this time” but we predict that Fields or Daudet, probably both, will be spinning discs with Graf, Sharrah, Andre and Long in the very near future …

Find out more about the disc brake revolution and what’s good about them in relation to BMX … we looked into them a little over a year ago … HERE.
