The 2017 Irish National Series is fast approaching so we figured it was a good time to get to know some of the Irish riders and the machines they’ll be on … we’ll add one or two Irish Rider Profiles a week leading up to the season opener.

If you want to be included, email your details to info@15.ie

Riders under 18 years of age must have parental permission.

Feburary 2017

Dean Gahan Fifteen BMX

Name:  Dean Gahan

Plate Number:  # 137

2017 Race Class:  Male 15+

Home Town:  Lucan / Clondalkin, Co. Dublin

Cycling Club:  Lucan BMX Club

Favourite place to ride / train? Has to be Lucan BMX

Favourite track you have raced?  Manchester Indoor (No wind is a gift).

Favourite riders to watch (Irish or International)?

  • Irish: Aaron Edwards – never fails to deliver and is one of the soundest people you could ever talk to, on or off the track.
  • International: Sam Willoughby – because you can’t beat the determination he’s showing on his road to recovery.

What has been your favourite Irish event so far?  The double header in Lucan (20-21 August 2016).

What’s your dream bike?  Love the Supercross at the minute, but possibly an Envy BLK or something really different like a Throdwn.

Lights of beeps?  Have been making the transition from beeps to lights recently but it still needs a bit of work. (My timing is way off!).

Manual or jump?  Manual for the minute but hoping to get both wheels off the ground soon enough.

How many years have you been racing? 18 months.

How did the 2016 season go for you?  National number 2 in Male 15+ wasn’t bad for my 1st full season racing but I was disappointed to miss out on the 1 plate.

What are you plans / goals / hopes for the 2017 season?  Get the Leaving Cert. out of the way, get to as many tracks as often as I can and take the number 1 plate in 15+. Hopefully get some international races in too.

Do you have any long term BMX goals?  Pick up the pace and catch up to the riders in Superclass.

How would you improve Irish BMX? What would you like to see in the future?  An indoor track and an 8 meter hill is definitely the way forward. Some live national broadcasting or a bit of news coverage at some of the big events throughout the year would give the sport the publicity that it needs to grow in the future and get more new riders involved.
