2024 UCI Pump Track World Championships South Africa | Qualified Riders

One of the best events of the year is upon us! This coming Saturday, the 9th November, over 100 of the fastest Pump Track racers on the planet will gather in the township of KwaMashu in Durban, South Africa, to fight for the UCI Rainbow Jersey at the Velosolutions Pump Track World Championships.

If previous years are any indication of what is to come in Durban, we expect to witness a technical, and tactical, masterclass from the few who have unlocked the art of the Pump Track.

Below is the list of who has qualified for the finals over the 2024 series, and we’ve asked a handful of the fastest how do you actually go fast on the Pump Track …

Riders are listed alphabetically by surname.

Esteban Abad Gutierrez- ESP

Amakye Andersen – USA

Niels Bensink – NED

Alec Bob (W1) – USA

‘For someone looking to pin it around a Pump Track.  I would suggest never touching the brakes, ride the middle line of the corners, and try to minimize any big gaps. Best to stick to quick pumps and manuals over obstacles.’

Tristan Borel – SUI

Dan Butterwoth – NZL

Jiayang Chen – CHN

Eddy Clerte – FRA

‘To go fast on a Pump Track you need coordination, strength, explosiveness and precision, the G-Force in the corners actually makes you dizzy when you’re not used to it. David Graf once measured the G-Force at world champs and he said it was insane, to me it feels as hard as squatting 100kg to corner full speed on the Pump Track, and there’s many corners in one lap, I think it brings way more acid lactic than BMX Racing.’

Mattia Costerman – ITA

Nick Cowie – NZL

Aaron Donald – AUS

Thibault Dupont – FRA

‘The most important thing for Pump Track is to be as perfect as possible on the course. I never go a full 100% at a Pump Track race because it costs so much energy, and it can cause mistakes. So, I’m always between 90-95% of my maximum, that’s why my riding looks chill, but I do my best to do a perfect lined lap! After that you must use your skills to pass through the rollers without losing time. Doing a jump, manual or pumping depends on your own ability and of the course you go on, that’s why each rider uses different skills during a Pump Track race.’

‘I would say the key to being fast is mainly in the corners. You have to push through them quickly and with a lot of focus, you need to look where you wanna go so in the corner, you look to the next jump. Drive over the rollers as smoothly as possible so you don’t lose speed. You can ride aggressively, but not too aggressively as you will make mistakes, and you will slow down.’

‘For me going fast on a Pump Track is not giving a 100%. When I focus on going fast only, I make too many mistakes. So personally, for me it works out better to go a bit under my maximum to finish a smooth lap. When I enjoy racing and put my mindset on having fun, the laps work out better than when I focus too much.’

Christa von Niederhäusern (W1) – SUI

‘To be fast on the pump track you need strength, fitness and the right skills. But the most important thing is precision. You have to learn to ride the pump track in such a way that you no longer make any mistakes. In a pump track race, there is never room for mistakes. I think the best way to learn this precision is to have fun on the pump track and spend a lot of time on it.’

Christa von Niederhäusern - 2024 Pump Track Worlds
