Aiko Gommers, the extremely talented, nearly 18-year-old twin from Scherpenheuvel, Belgium, has had a pretty good couple of years on her Supercross. Growing up she looked up to the likes of Caroline Buchanan, ‘she was just an inspiration for so many girls. She had everything, my dream was to become as good as she was’ … and now Aiko can call herself the UCI Red Bull Pump Track World Champion, and she’s also rocking the Belgium National Champion sleeve this year … she’s still only ‘nearly 18’.
Going into the 2021 Lisbon Red Bull Pump Track Worlds she had no expectations of winning, despite the chatter, ‘I just went there to have fun and to experience a big event like that. I couldn’t even imagine how big and cool it was going to be there’ … ‘Obviously I didn’t go there for nothing, so I hoped to get in the big or small final, but I never thought to myself I would go and win’. Despite the win, Aiko insists she didn’t train specifically for the pump track, ‘I always go to a pump track just to ride for fun, so not really to train … just riding my bike on a BMX track is good enough to be ready I think’.
Aiko now knows how to win on the pump track and is turning her sights back to the racetrack for the time being, ‘on the pump track in Lisbon it was really important to focus on my skills and keep my speed because it was a difficult pump track, on the BMX track the gate is the most important and that’s the biggest difference with a pump track, I guess. You also really need the horsepower in BMX races!’ Aiko is looking towards building that engine for the UCI Worlds in France this summer, and we bet, in between schoolwork, she may even train a little on the pump track. She will of course get to defend her world title at the Red Bull finals in Santiago, Chile this coming November before her long-term goal, the Paris Olympics in 2024. Luckily for Aiko, she gets to do it all on her brand new, and stunning, Supercross Vision F1, ‘it’s similar to my other bike (Envy BLK2) but I can see the improvements, I really like it’ … which neatly leads us to a drool inducing Bike Check …
