Niels Bensink on the Meybo fixed Rear End …
A lot of people are wondering what Meybo is doing on their rear ends … As you can see from the images, we ride with a chain tensioner hanging off our frame, like a derailleur. To increase stiffness and have a fixed chain stay for our disc brake we have been running a fixed rear end/axle for the last couple of years.
It basically means that we can customize the length of the back of our frame to our liking and that we can’t just move our wheel back and forward to adjust our chain tension etc. Instead we run a chain tensioner that is integrated into the frame and moves up and down in order to keep our chain tensioned. A really big plus of this system is that the back wheel can’t move around in the pads anymore which increases stiffness and makes it really easy to switch our gearing. The only thing we have to do is move the tensioner down and we are good to go without having to adjust the length of our bike.
In my opinion it is the best way to go in combination with a disc brake, since you don’t have to adjust everything every time you switch your gear etc. I run my back end at 39.3cm (measured from the centre of the bottom bracket to the centre of the rear axle). This is pretty average, not to long since I like to manual but also not to short so my bike is more stable on the bigger supercross tracks.
From 2019 Meybo bikes have the option to be disc brake compatible. Our partner, SD Components, have started producing their own disc brake system that consists of a brake lever, brake mount, disc and custom rear hub that goes with the Meybo frames. Currently we are testing this new system and so far, it’s been really good.
