With the advent of 31.8mm oversize handlebars the BMX racing world gained two things, well, arguably three things … stiffness, arguably strength, and weight, a significant amount of weight. Not only are the bars heavier, the oversize stems that hold them also gained weight. And to compound the issue, all that weight is up high, above the centre of gravity. Most people will shrug, but we weight parts haha … why add unnecessary weight.

The added stiffness is a huge benefit but how do you reduce this newly found weight? Materials is the obvious answer, but realistically, the only option to reduce the weight of oversize bars, for fully formed human use, is with the use of Titanium or Carbon … alloy would scare us! We’d also bet that carbon bars scare a lot of you out there, despite them being bulletproof when designed correctly. That leaves the exotic, and expensive option, TITANIUM! It’s light, stiff, and it’s still metal, so psychology strong enough for the wary.

Weighing in at a smidge under 550g for the 8” rise option, a lot lighter than their steel counterparts, which tip the scales in the regions of 990g.

As well as being lighter, the Titanium 373 Blanc bars are also a magnitude more beautiful and, let’s be honest, more desirable than chromoly … especially when you put Renaud Blanc’s name on them. Pride Racing have nailed the aesthetics here, the graphics are simple and subtle, the natural matt silver-grey finish looks luxurious, the welds are beautiful and the transition from the 31.8mm diameter to the thinner grip diameter is smooth … something that some other brands have been unable to achieve, opting instead, or maybe settling, for a somewhat bulbus look.

Our transition from 6° to 3° backsweep took some getting used to. The straight bars pull you a little further forward over the front wheel, it’s definitely a more aggressive position … but after a few of hours riding, we settled in and fell in love. The bars feel snappy out of the gate, great in the air and quick to turn when needed … although we have yet to unlock the Renaud Blanc manual ability setting, but we assume that will come …

There is a lot to like here. A significant weight saving, potentially a snappier response from the flatter geometry, and the bars just look beautiful. To finish the aesthetic, we had to pair the bars with the Pride Racing FTL Stem, which was also developed with Renaud Blanc … obviously we had to add the titanium bolts to complete the look.

When Nic Long ended his Pro career there was never a question about whether he should turn to the Vet Pro class. He was always in, 100% in. Nic Long is the personification of BMX, it oozes from his pores, of course he was going to race Vet. What did surprise us, at least a little, was when he transitioned to Vet, he did it on flats. We’re not sure he actually said it, but it was almost a soft retirement, not from BMX but rather from competitive BMX despite wanting to race a competitive class.

He was 100% in, but this was for fun, not accolades. And we were onboard, 100%. The man who had won World Cups, multiple US nationals, and led the Rio Olympic final, was racing on flats, on steel, and we loved it. We affectionately started referring to him as ‘Full Flat Nic’.

His ethos seemed to run parallel to our personal one, albeit at vastly different levels, BMX is more fun on flat pedals, and in the air at every opportunity. Obviously, that only applies to you once you’ve stopped chasing wins. Nic was racing … on flats, on a steel frame, for the love of the sport … for fun. ‘When I got hired by Huffy,’ he told us, ‘I started the conversation with saying I planned to continue riding flats and just having fun like I had been…I wasn’t selling results anymore’. Inevitably this meant the man who led that final in Rio was at the back of the pack more often than not, but he was entertaining the crowd, and himself we suspect … doing things you wouldn’t normally see in a race.

Having fun is a major part of the sport, but probably not enough to placate the competitive streak it takes to have the success Nic had in his Pro career. The decision was almost inevitable, the drive to succeed of an Olympic BMX racer was always going to come to the fore. Nic was making podiums again, on his terms, ‘I am the TM, so nobody (at Huffy) really cares what I’m racing. They do like seeing me winning or in the mix…but my job doesn’t depend on it at all’ … ‘I hate the pressure I feel to win or do well, I always have’, he told us, ‘but it’s been fun preparing for events and trying to execute’.

It’s using double heat-treated 6069-T6 alloy rather than the previous 7005, it has a T47 bottom bracket, it’s disc and V-brake compatibility, on every size. It’s stronger, tougher, and lighter with better weld-zone recovery and the same race proven geometry … and it arrives later this month!

Why 6069, and Why It Matters:

7005 was the right call when Supercross started running it over a decade ago. It isn’t the best option anymore. 6069-T6 takes about 30 percent more force to bend and 17 percent more force to break than 7005-T6. More important: the full T-6 process — solution heat treatment, liquid quench, artificial aging — restores strength right through the weld zones after the frame is built. 7005 can only air quench, which leaves weld areas softer than the surrounding material. With 6069, the metal comes back to full strength after welding. The alloy also carries Vanadium as a grain refiner, which makes it tougher and more workable at the same time.

Lab numbers: 6069-T6 yield strength 380–414 MPa vs. 7005-T6 at 290 MPa. Tensile strength 410–448 MPa vs. 350 MPa. Better fatigue life, superior fracture toughness, and full weld-zone recovery after heat treatment — something 7005 cannot do.

Pro and larger sizes ship with a T47 bottom bracket — the same setup Supercross runs on the Vision F1 and Vision F1x carbon flagships. Larger bearing surface, full thread engagement, no creak. It’s the right call for bigger riders pulling hard out of the gate, and it puts the aluminium RS7 on the same hardware platform as the top of the Supercross line.

Disc Tab and V-Brake Mounts — Every Size, Standard:

Every 2026 RS7 — from Micro through Pro XXL 24 — ships with a welded-on disc tab and removable V-brake mounts. Run a V-brake. Run a disc. Switch when the track or rulebook calls for it. The traditional axle and chain tensioner stay exactly where BMX racers expect them. Both brake options are standard on every size, with no upgrade fee.

Sizes and Colours:

The 2026 RS7 runs 21 sizes — Micro through Pro XXXXL in 20″, Mini through Pro XXL in 24″ Cruiser. Six launch colours: Jet Black, Gloss White, Hi Vis Yellow, Metallic Grey, Metallic Teal, and Sparkle Pink. Price is $699.95. Pre-orders are open now at supercrossbmx.com, with delivery arriving late May 2026. Specific size and colour combinations sell out within hours, the notify list gets access before the public launch.

Something that doesn’t happen enough is product comparisons. It gives an insight on what product is better than the other or does things differently which favors a certain rider. We got the opportunity to be part of a tire rolling resistance test in a laboratory in Germany. We couldn’t pass up seeing several BMX Race tires going through the test. How much do they expand when different pressure is applied. Will that affect the riding much, in other words, will tire pressure reduce rolling resistance? As measurements are facts, it still raises questions on performance. Will a slick tire slip on the gate? Is rubber compound something that will fix that? Does a wider tire have more grip, and does it absorb jumps better when racing with a carbon frame, forks and rims?

We put tires from the following companies through the test to get a good test result: Vee Tire, Tioga, Michelin, Maxxis, Vittoria, Schwalbe, and IRC. In fact, we tested a couple of different Tioga tires to get their results. Lower tire pressure might result in more rolling resistance, but will it necessarily be slower? Small bumps in the track surface or down the starting hill will be absorbed better when there’s not 8-bar pressure in the tire. It will also have more traction when you dive into a turn and speed out of it. How much will lower tire pressure benefit against less rolling resistance with pumped up tires that are about to explode?

Bigger wheels absorb bumps better. All tires were measured for their diameter at 6-bar. At 1597mm Tioga’s Fastr-X S-Spec 1.75 turned out to have the biggest circumference followed by Tioga’s Faster React 1.75 (1596mm) and Schwalbe’s SX_R 47-406 with 1mm less at 1595 millimeters. With each wheel rotation, bigger wheels will get you further. At 6-bar the Maxxis and Michelin tires measured in at 1553mm and 1552mm respectively.

Rolling weight matters so also the test tires were weighed without their packaging. Turns out that the heaviest tire of the nine BMX tires was the Maxxis DTH tire (430.2 grams) and Schwalbe’s SX-R came in at 293 grams which turned out the lightest of them all. So, with a front and a rear tire Maxxis will add 860.4 grams to your bike (without a tube) where Schwalbe makes your bike only 586 grams heavier. If you’re really weight conscious, every gram counts and you can save 274.4 grams if you choose between the lightest and the heaviest tire that we had in our test.

The rubber compound of each tire is different. The process there depends on the expertise of the brand, the materials used and the purpose of the tire. A heavier and thicker tire will probably prevent punctures better than a high-performance tire with a thinner rubber. Getting a flat tire because of a thorn or sharp item on the Michelin or Maxxis therefore is less likely than on a tire that uses less material. Although we did not cut every tire to see if they had a thorn prevention layer, we assume none of them have on these BMX tires as they would have on tires for city bikes for instance. We also did not test the tires on wear, so the ones with a softer compound will probably be replaced quicker than the ones where more rubber is used. So also here, there’s a consideration to be made when shopping for your next BMX tire for your race bike. The difference in width in tires between running 4-bar and 6-bar was about 0.7/0.8 mm for most. Michelin had the biggest difference with 0.9mm where the IRC Siren Pro Rise only had 4mm and the Tioga PowerBlock S-Spec expanded 0.5mm between 4 and 6-bar pressure in the tire. The tube used for all tests was an SVC 7 at 141g to keep things the same for every step along the way.

The test machine used in the lab was the Rolling Resistance apparatus. Which tire was the smoothest and had least friction. Obviously more factors come into play and each racer has their preferences, but the numbers don’t lie. The test machine supplied detailed measurements when tested at 4, 5 and 6-bar pressure in each tire. The speed that was used was 40 km/h each time, the same for every tire. The Vee Tire Speed Booster Elite 20 x 1.75 measured in at an average of 46.3 Watt. That turned out to be the tire with the most rolling resistance and was nearly double that of the winner of the test. In place 4 to 6, the Tioga tires rolled in with the Faster React getting a score of 33.9 Watts. IRC, with the help of Sam Willoughby, developed the Siren Pro Rise which got the bronze medal in the rolling resistance test with 28.8 Watts. The people at Vittoria have done their homework as they only released their BMX Race tire last year and created a fast one at 24.8 Watts. The lightest tire of them all also showed the best numbers as far as rolling resistance is concerned. The Schwalbe SX-R 47-406 is made for high performance and turned out to be the fastest tire in the tests with 23.9 Watts taken as an average over the 4-bar, 5-bar and 6-bar measurements.

Getting to see the testing done and the different numbers coming in, showed that a lot of work goes into making a good BMX tire. We only tested it on rolling resistance and not on wear, grip, compound, strength, thorn proof etc. The measurement results are listed, and you can make your own judgement. But numbers don’t lie …

The Apple Valley outfit have upgraded the monocoque chassis from the previous T1100 KS to a cutting-edge blend of Toray M40X and M46X Carbon Fiber with Nano Alloy Resin. The new material makes the Vision F1x even lighter, stronger and more rigid, in all the right places. Supercross tell us the material upgrade is a massive jump forward in the BMX world when it comes to going fast on carbon.

The cutting-edge material does come at a cost … the Vision F1x will lighten your wallet by $2399.95 for the frame. You can preorder the frame now, on the Supercross BMX site, and then watch Kye Whyte and Oli Moran ride theirs until yours arrives.

SUPERCROSS BMX – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Supercross BMX Launches the Vision F1x: The Intersection of Formula 1 Technology and World Championship Racing
APPLE VALLEY, CA – Supercross BMX, the 8-time Golden Crank “Bike of the Year” winner, is proud to announce the official launch of the Vision F1x. This frame represents a revolutionary evolution of the championship-proven monocoque Vision F1 and stands as the lightest, strongest, and most efficient Supercross BMX frame ever produced.

Engineering the “Launch”.
The Vision F1x is not merely an update; it is a material revolution. While building upon the world-renowned geometry of the Vision F1, Supercross engineers have integrated a proprietary blend of Toray M40x and M46x Prepreg Carbon Fiber—the same high-performance materials trusted by the Red Bull F1 Team for their chassis and utilized in critical aerospace applications.

Historically, carbon fiber engineering faced a “trade-off” problem: increasing stiffness usually meant losing durability. The F1x breaks this rule using the Torayca™ MX Series. By utilizing nano-level control of the graphite crystallite structure, the M46x fiber is approximately 20% stronger than previous high-modulus fibers while maintaining extreme rigidity.

For the racer, this translates to “The Launch.” The high-modulus fibers act as a reinforced spine, resisting lateral flex during a Pro-level gate start and ensuring 100% of the rider’s energy is transferred to the rear wheel. This “livelier” feel has already been validated on the track by elite team riders Kye Whyte and Oli Moran, who describe the bike as “jumping” forward the moment they engage.

“Winning that 8th Golden Crank was a massive honor, but we aren’t the type to sit back and rest on our records,” said Bill Ryan, owner of Supercross BMX. “That recognition has only made us dig harder to ensure we are giving the BMX community the world’s best products. From the 6-bar stiffened rear ends of our early Cro-Mo days to this new F1x, our goal has always been to eliminate flex and maximize speed.
