Supercross BMX Phenom Deegan Brown Officially Turns Pro; Sets Sights on 2026 Rookie Campaign and UCI World Cup Glory

APPLE VALLEY, CA – Supercross BMX is proud to officially announce that long-time factory ace Deegan Brown has officially made the leap to the professional ranks. After a dominant career in the amateur 17/20x class, Brown will make his professional debut in the USA BMX Pro Class for the 2026 season.

In addition to his domestic Pro campaign, Deegan will take his talents to the global stage, competing in the UCI BMX World Cups in the U23 Class. His international mission is focused on securing a coveted spot to represent Supercross BMX and Team USA at the UCI BMX World Championships in Brisbane. Deegan joins an elite roster of Supercross teammates chasing world-stage success, including Olympic medalist Kye Whyte, Oli Moran, Lexis Colby, Vicente Garcia, and Vineta Petersone.

Deegan has long been recognized as one of the most exciting riders to watch on the national circuit. Known for his effortless style, high-speed manualing, and tactical race craft, he has consistently stood atop the podium in the ultra-competitive amateur divisions. As he transitions to the elite level, the BMX community is eager to see his signature “stylish and winning ways” translate to the Pro gate.

Laura Smulders and Sylvain André elected to the UCI Athletes’ Commission

Teammates, Laura Smulders and Sylvain André, have overwhelmingly been elected to the UCI Athletes’ Commission and are now, in essence, the voice of the BMX Racing riders in the UCI. The vote took place last weekend at the 2025 UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Laura was the previous BMX Racing rider representative on the Commission, and has been re-elected with 73.3% of the vote. Canada’s James Palmer, now retired from racing, was the other previous rider rep. He will be replace by Sylvain, who got a massive 76.7% of the vote this time. Each term on the UCI Athletes’ Commission lasts four years.

The riders on the commission have an advisory role, which enables it to submit proposals to the UCI Management Committee … we’re intrigued to see what Laura and Sylvain first pot of call on the commission will be.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is pleased to announce that Laura Smulders (NED) and Sylvain André (FRA) have been elected to represent BMX Racing athletes on the UCI Athletes’ Commission following a vote held during the UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 28 July to 3 August.

Laura Smulders (re-elected) and Sylvain André were chosen from among five candidates – two women and three men – by the Elite and Under 23 athletes registered for the event.

Laura Smulders received 73.3% of the votes cast for women, while Sylvain André obtained 76.7% of the votes cast for the male candidates. The voting participation rate was 44.10%.

The members of the UCI Athletes’ Commission are elected for a four-year term. This term will begin at the 2025 UCI Congress in Kigali (Rwanda) – or on the date of their election for members elected after the UCI Congress – and will end at the 2029 UCI Congress in Copenhagen (Denmark).

This election is part of the renewal of the UCI Athletes’ Commission for the 2025-2029 period. Its new members are elected by their peers at the 2025 UCI World Championships in the various cycling disciplines.

Since 2017, the commission has been composed of 20 members, with each discipline or speciality – cyclo-cross, para cycling, BMX Racing, mountain bike cross-country, mountain bike downhill, trials, BMX Freestyle Park, road, track and indoor cycling – represented by two riders, one male and one female.

The President of the UCI Athletes’ Commission, a position currently held by Katerina Nash (CZE), is elected by the members of the commission and sits for a four-year term on the UCI Management Committee, the Federation’s executive body, which operates under the authority of the Congress.

The commission has an advisory role, which enables it to submit proposals to the UCI Management Committee. Its main areas of activity are the improvement of conditions for the practice of high-level sport, athlete protection in all its forms, the promotion of ethics and sportsmanship, the establishment of a direct link with the Federation’s decision-making bodies, the provision of information for athletes about significant regulatory changes and guidance for athletes after their retirement from sport.

Global Talent Competes for the Coveted Rainbow Stripes in the Heart of KwaMashu.

Ryan Gilchrist and Sabina Košárková claim victory at the Velosolutions UCI Pump Track World Championships in South Africa.

(Durban, South Africa) – The world’s best pump track riders descended upon KwaMashu, a vibrant township on Durban’s north coast, to battle for top honours at the Velosolutions UCI Pump Track World Championships. After fiercely competitive events in both the Men’s and Women’s categories, Ryan Gilchrist from Australia and Sabina Košárková from the Czech Republic demonstrated exceptional speed, skill, and determination to claim the coveted rainbow stripes in their respective categories.

The Men’s final was an all-Aussie showdown between Ryan Gilchrist and AJ Donald, who had advanced through intense rounds.  In the small final, 2023 World Champion Alec Bob (USA) defeated Eddy Clerte (FRA) to secure third place, leaving Clerte in fourth.

The crowd watched in anticipation as these elite riders went head-to-head, each determined to claim the top podium position. In the final, Gilchrist put down the fastest lap of the day (17.028) to take the top spot.

“Being World Champion is probably the best feeling of my life. 2024 has already been a year to remember: World Cup Overall, Crankworx and now a rainbow jersey. Not everything went perfect today – it was all about building towards the final and I was stoked to get faster and faster through the rounds. The Rainbow jersey has been on my bucket list since I was 10 so winning them on a mountain bike is incredible.”

Gilchrist is the first mountain biker since Tommy Zula at the inaugural Pump Track World Championships to take top honours.

In the Women’s final, Sabina Košárková and Nadine Aeberhard (SUI) competed with equal intensity, pushing each other to the limit. In the earlier semi-final, they posted stronger times than Vineta Petersone (LAT) and Kristina Madarásová (SVK) who finished in third and fourth respectively.

“My strategy was to stay consistent. I was putting really solid rounds in to break under 19 seconds. I was training a lot more than the last two years – I knew what I was missing was the mental side and I stayed really calm during the races. To hear the Czech anthem on the podium and get my rainbow stripes was very special. I still can’t believe I’m World Champion!”

The Velosolutions UCI Pump Track World Championships, in partnership with Pump for Peace and GO!Durban Academy, brought together 64 athletes from 16 countries in KwaMashu. Leading up to the main event, a week-long program of clinics and local tours allowed competitors to experience the natural beauty, culture, and energy of the City of eThekwini.

100 years ago, Paris 1924, the last time the Olympics visited the City of Lights, three Frenchmen swept the podium. Albert Seguin took gold while Jean Gounot and Francois Gangloff shared silver in the men’s gymnastics side horse vault event. In 2024, three Frenchmen, Joris Daudet, Sylvain André and Romain Mahieu, in the suburbs of Paris, not far from the Palace of Versailles, where about to set the SQY Olympic BMX Stadium on fire and repeat the 1924 podium sweep in front of a raucous French crowd which included the president of France, Emmanuel Macron!

The 2024 potential sweep has been talked about in the sport long before the opening ceremony along the Seine. The French had done it at the Sarrians World Cup after all, but when pressed, most serious people assumed another nation would spoil the French party with at least one podium spot going to the likes of Izaac, Cedric or Carlos. The odds on three Frenchmen again, at the Olympics, was infinitesimal, given the nature of our sport.

Come race day, the three Frenchmen were dominant, knocking out win after win in the early rounds with chants of ‘Allez les Bleues’ echoing around the arena, it was electric!

When the gate dropped in the final, Joris, from gate one, lead into the first turn with Romain on his shoulder who was being pressured by Australia’s Izaac Kennedy. Izzac ventured too high in the turn ending his Olympic dream in an instant, but Sylvain was doing Sylvain things and went under Romain and Izaac to emerge in second, but the 33-year-old World Champion, Joris Daudet, was gone, already thinking about his Gold medal. Sylvain said after the race that he was going too fast, so he knew he wouldn’t be caught (we’re paraphrasing here), but Switzerland’s Cedric Butti made Mahieu work hard for his Bronze.

Crossing the line, Joris looked back, then Sylvain looked back, there was Romain … 1,2,3 … 100 years later and the French had done it again in Paris. The arena erupted with the three emerging back from the finish line to celebrate to deafening roars.

Joris, in his fourth Olympic Games, the only man in Paris to be able to claim that honour, and now the Olympic Champion remarked, ‘It’s an amazing night, and being able to do that with my friends, that’s an unreal feeling. It’s amazing to be able to write history and to put BMX on top.’

While Mahieu was down on the last straight celebrating, Saya Sakakibara, his significant other, was climbing the steps to the 8m gate. The women’s Olympic medals were still up for grabs. Saya had been dominant so far, but so had the Tokyo Olympic Champion, Beth Shriever. Neither had dropped a lap all day and had yet to face off. The World Champion, Alise Willoughby, had also been blisteringly fast on the track … and in the Olympic final, under the immense pressure, anything was possible.

Saya slotted into lane one, while Beth picked lane six, again. She’d been out there all day. Alise was in three. Zoe Claessens was all the way out in eight and it’s a short first straight. And there in two, Manon Veenstra, under the radar, but getting it done! All eyes where on Saya, Beth and Alise when the start sequence began …

Beth’s gate wasn’t what she wanted, and she quickly got swallowed by the pack. Saya was gone with Alise in two, but Manon, was about to do what Sylvain did in the men’s final, she dove under Alise and emerged from turn one in the Silver medal position. Zoe in fifth hit the boosters, went between Alise and Molly and almost reigned in Manon. Laura Smulders found a huge amount of speed on the final straight for a fourth-place finish, but it was too late for a medal. Saya, Manon, Zoe … Gold, Silver, Bronze.

‘I can’t believe it! It just feels unreal. I wanted this, I envisioned this, I visioned me on the podium!’ the new Olympic Champion, Saya, told the UCI.
