The opening day of the 2026 UCI BMX Racing World Championships went off without a hitch. With the early rounds in the books, the qualified riders retired to their hotel rooms to rest for the following day and the opportunity to race for the World title.

But the universe had other plans and tossed the proverbial spanner into the works …

Sunday in Brisbane was windy, persistently windy, and as we know, BMX racing and wind do not play well together. As the Jr. Women lined up for practice, UCI officials were approached by two veteran racers who shared their safety concerns. The UCI then issued a statement stating that they regret ‘to announce that due to strong winds at the venue and in the interest of rider safety, the competition format for the 2026 UCI BMX Racing World Champions in Brisbane, Australia, has been modified’. Racing was to move to the 5m hill, and the second straight pro section would also not be used.

Our understanding is that the plan to switch to the 5m hill was almost immediately rejected by the team managers preferring to instead wait for a weather window for the 8m hill.

We waited …

Later that day the UCI announced a further delay due to the continuing weather conditions.

We waited some more … but it felt like a cancellation was coming, the weather was not improving, and it wasn’t predicted to improve any time soon. We even shared our assumptions on who the declared winners might be should the cancellation come. We’ve been here before after all …

Then the dreaded announcement came … cancelled! ‘Following repeated assessments of the prevailing weather conditions, it was determined that safe racing could not be conducted within the available competition window. The decision was taken with the support of the UCI Athletes’ Commission representative on site, the National Federation Team Managers, and the Local Organising Committee’. The podiums were announced based off times from the previous day’s last run rounds in each class and the BMX social media world lit up!

We do wonder if the 5m hill had of been agreed to on Sunday would we have had racing that night under the Sleeman lights?

But like we said we’ve been here before. The now infamous Bathurst World Cup was called the same way, and for much the same reason. The final challenge day, which included Masters, of the 2024 Worlds in Rock Hill was also called the same way, albeit the cancellation was under different circumstances. There was lightning in the area, which was clearly taken very seriously by the local authorities and resulted in a mandatory site evacuation. We also believe the organisers were operating under agreed time restraints with the local community, but maybe that saga is a story for another day.

I guess what we’re not so subtly alluding to here is the fact that if we knew how this was going to be called before it was, well then, all the stake holders in Brisbane probably, or should have known too. Connor knew in Bathurst, Jesse knew in Brisbane.

The social media shouts of ‘this would only happen in BMX’ are easily disproved with a google search. The Andorra Jr. MTB Downhill World Cup suffered the same fate in 2025, as did other cycling events, but its irrelevant … we’re here to race, we’re all here to race, the riders, the fans, the federations and the organisers.

Initially the possibility of a cancellation, and ultimately the cancellation itself in Brisbane was met with at least some understanding by high-profile riders, although there was no doubting the underlying disappointment. France’s Eddy Clerty commented, ‘The safety of the riders is what matters most, let’s not wait for someone to have a lifechanging accident to just cancel it. You can’t predict where the wind will come from, 5 meter or 8 meter will not change anything (the past has proved it), 50+ kmh wind should make the decision’.

Romain Mahieu, also stated that ‘cancelling the race was 100% the right thing to do today due to the weather’ but he went on to make it abundantly clear that he was unhappy with how it came about.

A recurring theme from riders in Brisbane was the disappointment in the channels of communication.

Two-time Olympic Champion, Maris Strombergs said ‘Today’s UCI decision was a disgrace to this sport’ and requested the opportunity to sit down with the UCI to discuss. Hopefully Maris follows up and shares what he learns from the potential meeting, we look forward to an update.

Over the years, we’ve been lucky enough to get a glimpse behind the curtain at these big events, and we’re always amazed at the scale … we see them as a massive juggernaut, moving forward towards the conclusion. We suspect the juggernaut is far from easy to divert or redirect and we often wonder if the Championship and Challenge World Championships were separated, would we have more fluid experience … we’re also assuming this is an unpopular opinion, so we’ll park it here for now.

As the evening rolled on in Brisbane the internet swung into high gear, it was relentless, and vicious at times … but despite the calls for heads to roll, boycotts and endless advice on how and where to run the event in the future, we ultimately saw six riders go home with the coveted Rainbow jerseys, and have their names etched in the history books as the 2026 World Champions. Did they get lucky? Or did they remember Connor in Bathurst, and skew the game to their advantage?

Jesse Asmus posted, ‘I’m a racer at heart, so for me this one doesn’t feel right. Yes, I am able to say I’m now an Elite World Champ, but It definitely feels like there’s an asterisk next to it. Obviously, this wasn’t a decision that I was a part of, and I wish there was a way we could have completed the race day to allow us athletes to race for that jersey. Coming into the weekend, I knew racing being cancelled on Sunday was a possibility, so I really put a lot of emphasis on getting clean and fast laps on Saturday to allow myself to get the best ranking possible coming into a questionable Sunday. Things went in my favour, and I was able to become the World Champ based off placing and lap time in my 1/8th final.’

The backlash will rumble on and on, but we hope lessons were learnt. We hope riders, federations, and organisers have genuine and productive discussions. We hope the same thing is avoidable in the future. We hope.

No one, not the riders, not the fans, and not the organisers, after the years of work it takes to make these events happen, will want to revisit this scenario in the future.

When we look back to the 2026 World Champions we may remember it for all the wrong reasons … but the fact is, Jesse Asmus, Bethany Shriever, Josh Jolly, Renske van Santvoort, Lucas Zhou and Freia Challis are the 2026 World Champions. Remember what it took for them to get to Brisbane …

The Legion Ammonite! Forged from 7075-T6 aluminium, the crank sets will come in four versions, Junior, Expert, Master and Ultimate.

The Junior, Expert and Master variants all feature an adjustable crank length, allowing it to grow with the rider, or to evolve if the riders preference were to change. The trio of adjustable options will come with interchangeable spacers, allowing the crank length to be changed in 2.5mm increments, up to a maximum of 5mm addition length.

The Ultimate offering is aimed at advance riders. This crank set length is a fixed length architecture aimed at delivering maximum stiffness and direct power transfer.

We’re intrigued by the offering here from Legion Bicycles and appreciate the effort to add some visual design flare as well as the length adjustment, but we’re gonna hold off on a full-throated opinion until we get our hands on production samples.

With the advent of 31.8mm oversize handlebars the BMX racing world gained two things, well, arguably three things … stiffness, arguably strength, and weight, a significant amount of weight. Not only are the bars heavier, the oversize stems that hold them also gained weight. And to compound the issue, all that weight is up high, above the centre of gravity. Most people will shrug, but we weight parts haha … why add unnecessary weight.

The added stiffness is a huge benefit but how do you reduce this newly found weight? Materials is the obvious answer, but realistically, the only option to reduce the weight of oversize bars, for fully formed human use, is with the use of Titanium or Carbon … alloy would scare us! We’d also bet that carbon bars scare a lot of you out there, despite them being bulletproof when designed correctly. That leaves the exotic, and expensive option, TITANIUM! It’s light, stiff, and it’s still metal, so psychology strong enough for the wary.

Weighing in at a smidge under 550g for the 8” rise option, a lot lighter than their steel counterparts, which tip the scales in the regions of 990g.

As well as being lighter, the Titanium 373 Blanc bars are also a magnitude more beautiful and, let’s be honest, more desirable than chromoly … especially when you put Renaud Blanc’s name on them. Pride Racing have nailed the aesthetics here, the graphics are simple and subtle, the natural matt silver-grey finish looks luxurious, the welds are beautiful and the transition from the 31.8mm diameter to the thinner grip diameter is smooth … something that some other brands have been unable to achieve, opting instead, or maybe settling, for a somewhat bulbus look.

Our transition from 6° to 3° backsweep took some getting used to. The straight bars pull you a little further forward over the front wheel, it’s definitely a more aggressive position … but after a few of hours riding, we settled in and fell in love.
There is a lot to like here. A significant weight saving, potentially a snappier response from the flatter geometry, and the bars just look beautiful.

When Nic Long ended his Pro career there was never a question about whether he should turn to the Vet Pro class. He was always in, 100% in. Nic Long is the personification of BMX, it oozes from his pores, of course he was going to race Vet. What did surprise us, at least a little, was when he transitioned to Vet, he did it on flats. We’re not sure he actually said it, but it was almost a soft retirement, not from BMX but rather from competitive BMX despite wanting to race a competitive class.

He was 100% in, but this was for fun, not accolades. And we were onboard, 100%. The man who had won World Cups, multiple US nationals, and led the Rio Olympic final, was racing on flats, on steel, and we loved it. We affectionately started referring to him as ‘Full Flat Nic’.

His ethos seemed to run parallel to our personal one, albeit at vastly different levels, BMX is more fun on flat pedals, and in the air at every opportunity. Obviously, that only applies to you once you’ve stopped chasing wins. Nic was racing … on flats, on a steel frame, for the love of the sport … for fun. ‘When I got hired by Huffy,’ he told us, ‘I started the conversation with saying I planned to continue riding flats and just having fun like I had been…I wasn’t selling results anymore’. Inevitably this meant the man who led that final in Rio was at the back of the pack more often than not, but he was entertaining the crowd, and himself we suspect … doing things you wouldn’t normally see in a race.

But then, we noticed the training began to pick up, the timing equipment started to appear, and the gates were back in full swing. And then he clipped in. Our heart sunk … just a little. ‘Full Flat Nic’ was sidelined. Nic was leading laps again. He tells us the decision was his alone, it was to help Huffy, ‘We were going to do a Chomo frame at some point, but with the creation of the Primus already in the works, I just felt like it would help sell some more bikes if I was leading a few more laps a year, and not floating around the back doing table tops’, … ‘Plus, I didn’t really want to ride flats on an aluminium bike’.

Having fun is a major part of the sport, but probably not enough to placate the competitive streak it takes to have the success Nic had in his Pro career. The decision was almost inevitable, the drive to succeed of an Olympic BMX racer was always going to come to the fore. Nic was making podiums again, on his terms, ‘I am the TM, so nobody (at Huffy) really cares what I’m racing. They do like seeing me winning or in the mix…but my job doesn’t depend on it at all’ … ‘I hate the pressure I feel to win or do well, I always have’, he told us, ‘but it’s been fun preparing for events and trying to execute’.

It’s using double heat-treated 6069-T6 alloy rather than the previous 7005, it has a T47 bottom bracket, it’s disc and V-brake compatibility, on every size. It’s stronger, tougher, and lighter with better weld-zone recovery and the same race proven geometry … and it arrives later this month!

Why 6069, and Why It Matters:

7005 was the right call when Supercross started running it over a decade ago. It isn’t the best option anymore. 6069-T6 takes about 30 percent more force to bend and 17 percent more force to break than 7005-T6. More important: the full T-6 process — solution heat treatment, liquid quench, artificial aging — restores strength right through the weld zones after the frame is built. 7005 can only air quench, which leaves weld areas softer than the surrounding material. With 6069, the metal comes back to full strength after welding. The alloy also carries Vanadium as a grain refiner, which makes it tougher and more workable at the same time.

Lab numbers: 6069-T6 yield strength 380–414 MPa vs. 7005-T6 at 290 MPa. Tensile strength 410–448 MPa vs. 350 MPa. Better fatigue life, superior fracture toughness, and full weld-zone recovery after heat treatment — something 7005 cannot do.

It’s the right call for bigger riders pulling hard out of the gate, and it puts the aluminium RS7 on the same hardware platform as the top of the Supercross line.

Disc Tab and V-Brake Mounts — Every Size, Standard:

Every 2026 RS7 — from Micro through Pro XXL 24 — ships with a welded-on disc tab and removable V-brake mounts. Run a V-brake. Run a disc. Switch when the track or rulebook calls for it. The traditional axle and chain tensioner stay exactly where BMX racers expect them. Both brake options are standard on every size, with no upgrade fee.

The 2026 RS7 runs 21 sizes — Micro through Pro XXXXL in 20″, Mini through Pro XXL in 24″ Cruiser. Six launch colours: Jet Black, Gloss White, Hi Vis Yellow, Metallic Grey, Metallic Teal, and Sparkle Pink. Price is $699.95. Pre-orders are open now at supercrossbmx.com, with delivery arriving late May 2026. Specific size and colour combinations sell out within hours, the notify list gets access before the public launch.
