Australia’s Crisp Bros. Racing have entered the World of Carbon BMX frames with the CBR04-C. The company has been working on the frame, on and off, since 2021 and currently have four prototypes out being tested by team riders.

Crisp Bros. Racing expects to start taking pre-orders in July 2026, once testing is complete. Once released the CBR04-C will come in an impressive amount sizes, Pro | PXL | PXXL | PXXL+ | PXXXL | CruiserXL & XXL. The ‘performance blue with neon orange/black decals’ prototype shown here, an PXXL+ with a top tube length of 22.25”, belongs to Zane Bourke.

The frame details we know so far …

– Full carbon monocoque design constructed from premium Toray T800+T1100 carbon fibre with ‘self-developed specialised resin’. Crisp Bros. claim it provides exceptional tensile strength and performance.

– Strengthened Bottom Bracket and head tube areas, ‘exceeding the strength of competitors’ frames by more than 30%’.

– Oversized rear back end to suit 10mm & 15mm axles, with over 40mm of adjustment.

– 27.2 integrated seat clamp setup.

– Euro BB & tapered head tube.

– Chainstays can accommodate up to a 53t chainring.

We have been casually talking to André Neteler for quite some time about his andrenalin wheels project, and we were intrigued, but we do get a lot of people contacting us about their latest and greatest product only to find out, when you delve in, that it’s just another branded part from a Chinese catalogue. So, while we were intrigued, we also had a healthy dose of scepticism.

Then we sat down and had a couple of hours deep dive with André, where we realised these are not just another set of nice wheels, these were meticulously designed, meticulously considered and built with a purpose.  The purpose … to be extremely light, stiff, and to go fast!

André Neteler has been building wheels for years; he describes it as his passion but knew he could improve on what was available on the market. What makes André qualified to conceive of the BMX wheel evolution you might ask? Well, on top of the desire to do it, he’s an old school racer, a mechanic for the German elite nation team, and runs a sideline as a Mercedes engineer (his real job) … but what’s better than one Mercedes engineer taking on the BMX wheel conundrum? Three Mercedes engineers!  André teamed up with two of his colleagues, Tim Zanker, a prototype enginneer, and Nicholas Minsch, an aerospace engineer, who also happen to run 12eleven, a boutique carbon fiber rim company. But even with all that expertise at their disposal, they would still have to change mindsets in the BMX world, a world that may just be entrenched in the idea that you need 36, three cross spokes. That’s not the world the Mercedes engineers wanted to reside in!

From the outset the target was simple, design and build a very high-end wheelset for elite level BMX racers. A wheel with a weight in the region of 1100g, with a low rolling resistance, and as stiff as other builds on the market. Easy huh!

The team approached Heuer Radsport, a company who develops high-end track bike hubs, to help with the project. Neither Heuer Radsport or 12eleven had been in the BMX world up to this point, but after what we assume took some convincing, both enthusiastically joined the project … and they all set about the design process.

The key to the weight loss on the wheel design; besides carefully designing the carbon rims with high grade material, and a minimalist set high-end hubs … was the spokes, or rather the amount of spokes and tier length. How can you reduce the number of them and still retain stiffness and strength? You can’t just decide to go to 28 spokes on the rear wheel for a fully formed adult and cross your fingers. Every dimension on the hubs was analysed, every fraction of a millimetre was tweaked to perfection. Wider flanges are better for strength, matching the angle of the spokes on the left and the right to make them symmetrical (which is not straightforward!) increases stiffness, more material between spoke holes increases hub strength in critical areas. The level of design detail the team went to in order achieve the goal is truly impressive. If you look closely, you’ll even notice the rear rim is offset 2.5mm to get the symmetrical spokes. All the specs and technical details are impressive, but its not until you get your hands on a set of the andrenalin wheels, that you realise how beautiful the wheels are. All the details are simple, functional, designed to perfection, not embellished. Purpose over gimmick. And light, oh my god are they light! The rear wheel, a 28 spoke, 2 cross lace design, tipped our scales (without tyres or tubes) at 690g, and the front, with its visually impressive, 24 spoke radially laced design (shorter spokes, means lighter), came in at a featherweight 510g. And it’s all rotational weight!

Once on the bike, the weight saving is instantly noticeable, the bike just accelerates effortlessly. Despite the slight feeling of concern when you first put the 28 and 24 spoke wheels on a bike you are about to jump doubles on, we noticed no lack of strength or stiffness. In fact, the wheels felt stiffer than other wheels to us. We have no doubt that that is partially due to the quality of materials, and in no small part to André’s expertise in wheel building.

If you are used to the silence of the most ubiquitous hubs at the track, you’ll instantly notice the buzz from the Heuer hubs, we liked the change to be honest. You may even notice the lack of instant engagement from the rear hub, but it’s so close to instant that it’s almost a moot point. What we are sure you will notice is how smooth the ride becomes!

While we’re the first to admit that we are not even close to enacting the levels of force through the wheels, especially the rear, as an Elite rider would, we’re confident we case more jumps, and drop the front on lips during failed manuals, than any elite rider could dream of. We’ve had zero issues so far …

Elite riders have been rigorously testing the wheels for a significant amount of time though. Germany’s Philip Schaub told us, ‘I‘ve been using the Adrenalin wheel set for 1,5 years already and I love them. They are not only super light and roll smooth, but also super stiff. In many ways, the best wheelset you can get right now.’ The team at Andrenalin initially expected the wheels to last a top-level rider in the region of just one season, and way longer for the rest of us mere mortals, but Philip remarked, ‘even after 1.5 years they still feel like day one.’

Julian Schmidt, another German national team rider has also been testing the concept, ‘I really like the wheels! They are next level! Extremely light weight and at same time stiff and robust enough for elite racing.’

It’s not just Philip and Julian who have been racing with the wheels, a lot of the German team, from Aron Beck to Stefan Heil, have been running the wheels at World Cups and World Championships. You might even have seen some of the components on Swiss Olympian Cedric Butti’s bike.

What we think is key to the success here was the approach the team took. It wasn’t to design the best rim and the best hub … it was a cohesive approach, it was to design the best wheel! Everything must work together, in unison, to achieve the goal … and it does. The 12eleven rims, the Heuer Radsport hubs, the Sapim CX-Ray Spokes, the beautifully designed Heuer cog, the care in the build … they all excel together. The wheels excel! Don’t think of the reduced number of spokes, think of the endless hours of engineering, the specialist knowledge, the passion it takes to take this type of idea from paper to the bike. The result is undoubtedly impressive …

Back in the 80’s Huffy was a powerhouse, of sorts, in the BMX World, especially in the USA, with BMX legends like Gary Ellis, Mike King, and Stu Thomsen riding a signature frame, all shredding on a Huffy. Even in the 90’s they were supporting heavy hitters like Todd Lyons, then there was a lull and Huffy disappeared from the racing scene, only to be found in the history pages.

Then came 2024 … on January 23rd the iconic bicycle brand announced they were back in the BMX Racing game, with the launch of their @huffy_bmx Instagram page, and on January 24th they announced Carly Kane was the racer who would help propel them back into the spotlight. It was an astute pick!  In March Carly picked up a Silver medal at the US National Championships and in May, she went to the UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Rock Hill and rolled across the finish line World Number 6, in Elite Women. All that on a blacked-out frame as she waited for Huffy to build their first professional race frame in quite some time. Now in August 2024, Carly is rolling on a Huffy … albeit a prototype, which both Huffy and Carly are not yet ready to share all the details despite our prodding … she did however give us some interesting background on the project …

‘I’ve been working with the absolutely incredible crew at Huffy to develop a high-end race frame since January. The prototype I am currently riding is simply a “test mule”, and it won’t fully reflect the final design of the production frame. We’re actually in the process of building several “test mules” so that we can do back-to-back testing with some varying factors to see what performs best’.

‘The technical team of Huffy’s parent company, United Wheels Inc. (UWI), has experience in various cycling disciplines doing design work for all their brands, and the process of making test mules is rather common in the high-end mountain bike and gravel world. The engineers at Huffy are just applying this process to the world of BMX racing! I have loved every minute of learning, experimenting, and discussing all of the little details with the team. I’m a very data-driven person, so having numbers and science to look at is just so exciting to me’.

You will have seen Carly riding her new ‘test mule’ since the beginning of august on her socials, and while it’s likely to evolve somewhat before it appears on general sale she’s clearly excited with where they are, ‘I’m seriously thrilled with the way the bike handles, the weight, the stiffness- all of it. I told the team that I was actually a little bit worried to ride something new, as prior to my Huffy prototype, I had been riding the same model of frame for almost four years. The transition to the new frame was practically seamless, and since the switch I have hit a few PB’s during my sprint and track work, which makes me feel pretty good. I was very confident in the engineers who designed my frame before riding it, but being on a Huffy has completely fortified that confidence’.

As of yet there is no timeline for production frames to hit the stores as both Carly and Huffy want it to be perfect when it does, ‘The Huffy team plans for the production version to be a massive step above anything they currently have,’ Carly told us,  ‘we fully intend for the new frame to set the tone for how Huffy is perceived in the BMX race market moving forward … I can guarantee they will be well worth the wait!’

In 2019 Supercross, for the company’s 30-year anniversary, released a limited run of 30 ‘SX250’ frame and forks using Tange Prestige Tubing and then, 3 years later for the company’s 33rd year, they dropped the cruiser version using Reynolds Tubing. Now it’s 2024, and the 35th Anniversary, so you guessed it, Supercross are about to set the SX250 free again! This release includes three models, a 20” Pro XXL version, a 26” version, as well as a 29” model. How many you ask, is there enought? Well, you’ll have to be quick as only 35 of each size is planned worldwide, with a launch date of July 5th! No pricing is available just yet but keep an eye on supercrossbmx.com for an announcement soon.

The SX250’s Six Bar Frame origins date back to 1989 and evolved for over a decade at Supercross BMX, even including a version with carbon top and bottom tubes. The Six Bar design was to overcome a frame flex issue caused by the limited tubing sizes available from the steel mills at the time… “So, to solve the issue of frame flex, we added additional triangulation. By lowering the first set of seat stays and adding the second set of stays, we increased rear-end rigidity. This produced a stiffer, faster-accelerating frame, that still rode smoother than other options on the market.”

To add even more authenticity to the SX250 35 Year Anniversary Edition, the guys at Supercross revisited the “old dies and pulled out the template for the original SX250 dropout which hasn’t been used since 1999, and had that dropout laser cut out of 1/4” thick cro-mo for these frames”. 25 years later, and the new production run is closer than ever to the original, which is bound to intrigue the Supercross fans out there, not to mention the sports history buffs.

This time around the 20” and 26” models will use V-Brakes while the 29” model slaps on some discs. This is also the first time the 20” will come in Reynolds Air Hardened Triple Butted Cro-mo.

If you were paying attention to the recent ‘DirtyFest 2’ in California, you probably noticed Josh ‘Camel Joe’ Randall shredding the old school track on the SX250 35 Year Anniversary Edition … serial number 1.

We are not sure yet if there will be a pre-ordering list prior to the launch date but if you want one, be ready to pounce! We’ve already got a spot on the wall picked out!

So what’s next for old school Supercross? Looking through these old BMX Plus clippings, we’d probably put money on the ‘Supercross Strong Arm’ cranks making an appearance in the future. Some bent cranks on the SX250 would look pretty cool in 2024!

In the ongoing search for the optimal design for the current trend in chain tensioners, Lena Garcia of BMX Sarrians, has been testing this AllYoogs ‘Universal Chain Tensioner with Spring’ set up. The cog approach is obviously to reduce friction in the system when compared to the static nylon guide version, but we wounder if the second cog may reintroduce some of that friction? In theory the second cog reduces the likelihood of the chain bouncing off the cog without the need for an overly tightened chain. It will be interesting to see if this system catches on. Why this system is required in a frame that does not have a fixed axel position is another question. Unless you want your rear end and exact length. Either way, its intriguing, and we’ll update this post when we have the full lowdown on the chain tensionser system.

The frame here is also of interest. It’s a prototype for the next GT Speed Series, you’ve probably noticed the likes of Kye Whyte, Oliver Moran and Camille Maire running it for a while now.
