So, while we were intrigued, we also had a healthy dose of scepticism.

Then we sat down and had a couple of hours deep dive with André, where we realised these are not just another set of nice wheels, these were meticulously designed, meticulously considered and built with a purpose. The purpose … to be extremely light, stiff, and to go fast!

André Neteler has been building wheels for years; he describes it as his passion but knew he could improve on what was available on the market. What makes André qualified to conceive of the BMX wheel evolution you might ask? Well, on top of the desire to do it, he’s an old school racer, a mechanic for the German elite nation team, and runs a sideline as a Mercedes engineer (his real job) … but what’s better than one Mercedes engineer taking on the BMX wheel conundrum? Three Mercedes engineers! André teamed up with two of his colleagues, Tim Zanker, a prototype enginneer, and Nicholas Minsch, an aerospace engineer, who also happen to run 12eleven, a boutique carbon fiber rim company. But even with all that expertise at their disposal, they would still have to change mindsets in the BMX world, a world that may just be entrenched in the idea that you need 36, three cross spokes. That’s not the world the Mercedes engineers wanted to reside in!

From the outset the target was simple, design and build a very high-end wheelset for elite level BMX racers. A wheel with a weight in the region of 1100g, with a low rolling resistance, and as stiff as other builds on the market. Easy huh!

The team approached Heuer Radsport, a company who develops high-end track bike hubs, to help with the project. Neither Heuer Radsport or 12eleven had been in the BMX world up to this point, but after what we assume took some convincing, both enthusiastically joined the project … and they all set about the design process.

The key to the weight loss on the wheel design; besides carefully designing the carbon rims with high grade material, and a minimalist set high-end hubs … was the spokes, or rather the amount of spokes and tier length. How can you reduce the number of them and still retain stiffness and strength? You can’t just decide to go to 28 spokes on the rear wheel for a fully formed adult and cross your fingers. Every dimension on the hubs was analysed, every fraction of a millimetre was tweaked to perfection. Wider flanges are better for strength, matching the angle of the spokes on the left and the right to make them symmetrical (which is not straightforward!) increases stiffness, more material between spoke holes increases hub strength in critical areas. The level of design detail the team went to in order achieve the goal is truly impressive. If you look closely, you’ll even notice the rear rim is offset 2.5mm to get the symmetrical spokes.

All the specs and technical details are impressive, but its not until you get your hands on a set of the andrenalin wheels, that you realise how beautiful the wheels are. All the details are simple, functional, designed to perfection, not embellished. Purpose over gimmick. And light, oh my god are they light! The rear wheel, a 28 spoke, 2 cross lace design, tipped our scales (without tyres or tubes) at 690g, and the front, with its visually impressive, 24 spoke radially laced design (shorter spokes, means lighter), came in at a featherweight 510g. And it’s all rotational weight!

Once on the bike, the weight saving is instantly noticeable, the bike just accelerates effortlessly. Despite the slight feeling of concern when you first put the 28 and 24 spoke wheels on a bike you are about to jump doubles on, we noticed no lack of strength or stiffness. In fact, the wheels felt stiffer than other wheels to us. We have no doubt that that is partially due to the quality of materials, and in no small part to André’s expertise in wheel building.

If you are used to the silence of the most ubiquitous hubs at the track, you’ll instantly notice the buzz from the Heuer hubs, we liked the change to be honest. You may even notice the lack of instant engagement from the rear hub, but it’s so close to instant that it’s almost a moot point. What we are sure you will notice is how smooth the ride becomes!

While we’re the first to admit that we are not even close to enacting the levels of force through the wheels, especially the rear, as an Elite rider would, we’re confident we case more jumps, and drop the front on lips during failed manuals, than any elite rider could dream of. We’ve had zero issues so far …

Elite riders have been rigorously testing the wheels for a significant amount of time though. Germany’s Philip Schaub told us, ‘I‘ve been using the Adrenalin wheel set for 1,5 years already and I love them. They are not only super light and roll smooth, but also super stiff. In many ways, the best wheelset you can get right now.’ The team at Andrenalin initially expected the wheels to last a top-level rider in the region of just one season, and way longer for the rest of us mere mortals, but Philip remarked, ‘even after 1.5 years they still feel like day one.’

Julian Schmidt, another German national team rider has also been testing the concept, ‘I really like the wheels! They are next level! Extremely light weight and at same time stiff and robust enough for elite racing.’

What we think is key to the success here was the approach the team took. It wasn’t to design the best rim and the best hub … it was a cohesive approach, it was to design the best wheel! Everything must work together, in unison, to achieve the goal … and it does. The 12eleven rims, the Heuer Radsport hubs, the Sapim CX-Ray Spokes, the beautifully designed Heuer cog, the care in the build … they all excel together. The wheels excel! Don’t think of the reduced number of spokes, think of the endless hours of engineering, the specialist knowledge, the passion it takes to take this type of idea from paper to the bike. The result is undoubtedly impressive …

Are you ready for a 4130 chromoly race machine that can take you from the track to the trails and beyond? Let us re-introduce the infamous Torker Pro-X. Built on 50 years of Torker Racing history and refined with Supercross’ race-winning geometry, this is much more than another retro repop.

That’s right! The brand that started dominating tracks in 1976 and helped kick off the freestyle revolution with riders using their race bikes as true dual-purpose machines is back and better than ever, bringing back some of its greatest hits to help you make it to the podium in style.

It has been 40 years since BMX Action NORA Cup winners Tommy Brackens and Mike “Hollywood” Miranda scored their first pro victories aboard the Torker Pro-X, and even longer since the iconic Torker LP ruled tracks around the world. Now, in 2025, Torker is back with a vengeance.

Looking for more of a retro look? The Torker LP, the frame Clint Miller rode to win the very first IBMXF-sanctioned race at the 1981 Anglo-American Challenge Invitational Championship in Redditch, England, uses the same twin top tubes and bottom bracket bracing but with a round down tube and the iconic plate gussets at the head tube for the full vintage feel while keeping the same modern geometry.

The 31.8mm oversized design only raises your bars by about 12mm (to centre of clamp area of bars), from the underside of the stem, which effectively reduces your bar height by about 0.5”, when compared to the alternative. Why would you want lower bars? Well, other than if you are just small, you can potentially shift your bodyweight, gaining a lower centre of gravity, adding stability, responsiveness … and maybe, snappier gates. It does take time to adjust, and it may not be as comfortable, but when the goal is to go as fast and as low as possible …

German bicycle tyre giant Schwalbe have released BMX race tyres in the past without really gaining traction (pun intended) … but the release of the company’s latest creation really caught our eye.

It was all a little clandestine to begin with. Niek Kimmann was riding with an unknown tyre; people were asking us ‘do you know what tyres Michael Bias is using?’ His Inspyre teammate, Jeremy Rencurel was also testing them. It was clear that the mystery brand was developing something special, with some of the most talented riders in the sport.

Then, after four UCI World Cups wins during the ‘development phase’, Schwalbe unleased the SX-R. Then came Paris, where Saya Sakakibara snatched the Olympic Gold … on the Schwalbe SX-Rs.

The first thing you’ll notice is how minimalist the tyres are. The slick centre band is the most prominent we’ve seen on a BMX race tyre to date and the directional thread pattern on the sides has minimal depth. After a discussion with Schwalbe, it’s obvious that they have designed the SX-Rs for racing at the highest level, on modern tracks. If you still race around loose dirt turns, there are probably better options out there for you.

The second thing you’ll notice, when you actually get your hands on the SX-Rs, is the weight, or the lack there of. They are light, very light. We weighed our sample in at a miniscule 278g, despite the official weight of 290g. That’s about 15 grams lighter than the previous lightest tyre we’ve found, and we’ve looked … a lot. Reduce rotational weight, accelerate quicker, go faster …

Now that you can get up to top speed quickly, how’s the grip? The first time we used them on a pump track we were nervous in the tight banked turns. The tyres produce a sound, albeit very quiet, that we’ve not heard before, it was a little unnerving, but once you settle in, become more comfortable and get over the psychological issue of looking down at uber-slick tyre between your forks, and really push them into a turn, you’ll discover they stick like glue. And when worn in slightly, they only get better. The rubber feels almost soft to the touch, almost sticky.

In a straight line, on a hard packed surface, it’s a no brainer, they are fast. Zero resistance! Likewise on the gate, we found zero issues. The modern BMX gate provides a tonne of built in grip so the slick centres on they tyres combined with the feather weight let you push through, getting up to top speed quickly.

We were also curious to get the opinion of someone who has been using the tyres through the development phase of the project, so we asked Michael Bias. “I’ve been using them since May this year, after we did testing with them in Germany. I was quite reluctant to change as I was comfortable on my old set up but after the session with them finding the right tyre pressures & pushing the tyres I was fully converted and haven’t looked back since” he told us.

We are not sure why it hasn’t happened already but Schwalbe may actually force you to think about BMX racing slightly differently … do you have the right equipment for the current conditions? The best analogy that comes to mind is F1 tyres, Red indicates soft and slick, for the best conditions. Yellow means medium, and white is the hardest compound that will last the longest but is the slowest. In BMX terms, we feel like the Schwalbe SX-Rs would fall into the F1 Red category, fastest in the right conditions, which for the most part is were BMX racing lives.

We haven’t been using the tyres long enough to comment on longevity but we’re assuming you may replace these more often than other tyres. How much more? We’re not sure yet, but more. Think F1 Red!

Today, the SX-Rs are only available in 47-406 (approx. 20 x 1.85”). Our preferred rear option, the thinner 42-406 (approx. 20 x 1.60”) version hasn’t hit the streets yet but we’re told it will appear any day now. We’re very interested to try that in combination with the bigger front tyre. Out of interest, when we measured the width of the 47-406 compared to a 20 x1.75” of the most ubiquitous brand on the BMX market, the Schwalbe came in at 0.5mm thinner, on the same rim. Tyre sizes can be a bit of a minefield.

So are the Schwalbe SX-R tyres worth your €42.00 … given the right conditions, we think they may just be a steal … reduce rotational weight, go faster …

After four or five years in existence it’s becoming hard to call Marshal Racing a ‘new’ French brand, afterall four years in BMX can feel like a lifetime. Over that time, they have been evolving and tweaking their alloy frames to a point where their Punisher V2 more closely resembled carbon than the 6061 T6 aluminium it was constructed from … which kinda had us wondering why not just go the whole hog and jump into carbon. And now they have. The SR71 Blackbird Supersonic will hit the streets on December 1st, in a Pro XL (21”) and ProXXL (21.5”), with a ProXXL (22”), and ProXXXL (22.5”) following in February 2025.

Lionel Ribiere, the President of the LRB Racing Group, told us, ‘Expanding into the carbon market has always been part of our medium-term plan. Carbon fibre offers several advantages, such as increased stiffness, reduced weight, and the ability to create complex shapes that are difficult to achieve with alloy’.

We were glad to hear that the new frame has been designed from the ground up over a two-year R&D period, and thankfully, relies on 100% new tooling. Nothing erks us more than seeing a ‘new’ frame hit the market that has clearly been sourced in a manufactures catalogue.

Marshal Racing have been unitising their experienced U23 Belgium rider, Mathis Carlier, during the development period to help dial in, and ‘optimize every aspect of the frame, from stiffness to responsiveness and comfort’. The new frame is ultimately constructed using a one-piece monocoque process rather than bonding sections together resulting in ‘optimal stiffness’ and enabling ‘better weight distribution while preserving the integrity of the frame’.

‘The plane’s reputation for speed, agility, and cutting-edge technology made it a natural choice for our new carbon frame.’ Lionel told us, ‘The sleek design and advanced capabilities of the SR-71 inspired us to create an equally impressive bike … Beyond its name, we wanted to translate the entire aesthetic of a supersonic aircraft into this frame’.

The large ‘patented rear adjustment system’, dubbed the ‘Semi-Circular System’ by Marshal, provides a 50mm adjustment in 6 fixed positions for a 10mm rear axle, or 4 positions for a 15mm rear axle. While it may be complex looking when compared to the more traditional BMX dropout, Marshal tells us, ‘the system is quick and easy to adjust, without the need for any special tools. Tighten your wheel, and it will be immediately straight’, while guaranteeing ‘maximum rigidity at each setting, for optimal power transfer and better stability’.

The integrated disc brake adapter is designed to be compatible with all market standards which is handy. The eagle eyed among you will have also noticed that the slot for the 80mm chain tensioner mounting is present on both sides. Marshal envisages the extra slot being used for the integration of ‘connected devices’ … imagine GoPro mounts and the likes. Don’t be surprised to see the ‘Semi-Circular System’ appear on future aluminium frames from the brand.

Marshal Racing describe the frames geometry as ‘aggressive’, telling us it’s ‘characterized by hydroformed tubes with specific sections, offering both stiffness and lightness. Its wheelbase and head angle give it exceptional handling, ideal for the most demanding riders. The chain path has been carefully designed to eliminate any frame contact and accommodate a gear ratio as high as 52×18. Although we drew inspiration from our alloy frames for some basics, the SR71’s geometry is unique. Carbon fibre allowed us to push the limits of design further, creating organic shapes and complex tube sections that optimize stiffness and resistance to stress. The result? A frame that combines the performance of a supersonic aircraft with the precision of a competition tool’.

Back in the 80’s Huffy was a powerhouse, of sorts, in the BMX World, especially in the USA, with BMX legends like Gary Ellis, Mike King, and Stu Thomsen riding a signature frame, all shredding on a Huffy. Even in the 90’s they were supporting heavy hitters like Todd Lyons, then there was a lull and Huffy disappeared from the racing scene, only to be found in the history pages.

Then came 2024 … on January 23rd the iconic bicycle brand announced they were back in the BMX Racing game, with the launch of their @huffy_bmx Instagram page, and on January 24th they announced Carly Kane was the racer who would help propel them back into the spotlight. It was an astute pick! In March Carly picked up a Silver medal at the US National Championships and in May, she went to the UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Rock Hill and rolled across the finish line World Number 6, in Elite Women. All that on a blacked-out frame as she waited for Huffy to build their first professional race frame in quite some time. Now in August 2024, Carly is rolling on a Huffy … albeit a prototype, which both Huffy and Carly are not yet ready to share all the details despite our prodding … she did however give us some interesting background on the project …

‘The technical team of Huffy’s parent company, United Wheels Inc. I told the team that I was actually a little bit worried to ride something new, as prior to my Huffy prototype, I had been riding the same model of frame for almost four years. The transition to the new frame was practically seamless, and since the switch I have hit a few PB’s during my sprint and track work, which makes me feel pretty good. I was very confident in the engineers who designed my frame before riding it, but being on a Huffy has completely fortified that confidence’.

As of yet there is no timeline for production frames to hit the stores as both Carly and Huffy want it to be perfect when it does, ‘The Huffy team plans for the production version to be a massive step above anything they currently have,’ Carly told us, ‘we fully intend for the new frame to set the tone for how Huffy is perceived in the BMX race market moving forward … I can guarantee they will be well worth the wait!’

The shoes have painstakingly been designed to perfection, and while they are obviously still Vans, they are most definitely Supercross Vans. These are BMX shoes, make no mistake, ‘When BMX has been on your mind for over 4 decades, you need a shoe that is specifically designed with BMX in mind’, Bill Ryan of Supercross told us. ‘The BMX Old Skool has been our go-to shoe for years, and when it came time to create a special 35-year anniversary Supercross BMX / Vans collaboration, there was no question that this had to be the first shoe we made. It has been formulated for modern riding. With an iconic look, maximum pedal feel, and enhanced cushioning, this vulcanized low-top silhouette offers unrivalled BMX innovation to support your progression. Now, we’ve added a Supercross BMX look and feel. We incorporated the design of the Dream Team Uniform and our iconic Supercross BMX colors of Yellow, Blue, Red, White, and Black, creating a shoe that isn’t over the top, but one you’ll want to wear every time you head to the track, the trails, the pump track, or out with friends.’

The right shoe usually wore out first from using it as a brake since side-pull brakes sucked. So sometimes, we’d end up with mismatched shoes. It became a trend in the early ’80s among us poor BMXers—to have one shoe Red/Blue/Red and the other Gold/Blue/Gold, or a few other color combos that we could put together. Well, Stevie let me bring that into these ERA Supercross BMX / Vans with the mismatched tongues. One is Red, one is Blue, and of course, there’s the one Bright Yellow Eyelet by the Supercross BMX “95” logo.’

The Supercoss Era features the legendary low-top shoe design, lace-up closure, a sturdy canvas upper, the essential supportive padded collars, metal eyelets, the Vans signature rubber waffle outsoles, and the ‘UltraCush’ insole, for the most comfortable Era Vans ever, in a simple Supercross BMX stylish package.

In the ongoing search for the optimal design for the current trend in chain tensioners, Lena Garcia of BMX Sarrians, has been testing this AllYoogs ‘Universal Chain Tensioner with Spring’ set up. The cog approach is obviously to reduce friction in the system when compared to the static nylon guide version, but we wounder if the second cog may reintroduce some of that friction? In theory the second cog reduces the likelihood of the chain bouncing off the cog without the need for an overly tightened chain. It will be interesting to see if this system catches on. Why this system is required in a frame that does not have a fixed axel position is another question. Unless you want your rear end and exact length. Either way, its intriguing, and we’ll update this post when we have the full lowdown on the chain tensionser system.
