Tempo BMX Prototype SX Frame | The Allegro

Tempo BMX Prototype SX Frame | The Allegro

For the past 14 months, Australian Pro racer and Thai National Team Coach, Adam Carey, has been working with Australian BMX brand, Tempo BMX, to develop the Allegro frame. Yes it’s yet another frame being launched into the small market but what’s of particular interest with this project is that the frame is being optimised specifically for the supercross flavour of racing and the speeds attained in conjunction with the hill, a unique selling point.

Tempo BMX where born out of an Australian distributor that Carey is supported by, hence the connection, and with Carey’s experience working with manufactures out of Taiwan, the Tempo team thrust Adam into the development process. ‘We initially began testing carbon frames but after many discussions with manufacturers and frame builders I knew, I went back to Hydroformed alloy and explored the improvement of weld contacts, tubing and design’ Adam told us. The material choice was also a consideration as a major goal of the project is to offer a budget friendly frame to the market.

First on the refinement list was the bottom bracket, ‘I’ve found the low BB isn’t conducive with some of the (SX) tracks. So, I started testing bikes and picking things apart’ … ‘The geometry specifically around the BB is to increase leverage points and pedal force contact. Looking specifically at acceleration and handling through lips to improve horizontal transitions.’

The images shown here are of the first Allegro prototype, and while everything is not there just yet, the drop outs are getting more love for example, Carey is happy with the build, ‘The BB is high, to sit your hips higher in the lip, the front is lower to allow you to push through better and the long wheel base to offer that stability. It’s the longest bike I’ve ridden by 13mm!’

While the final price is not nailed down just yet, you should be able to pre-order soon for delivery of the Allegro frame during the first half of 2021. It will be interesting to see how far this supercross specific design will go and if it will spawn similar projects from other brands … we’ll follow up …
