RE: CFP WELCOMES NEW CLASS OF TALENTED RIDERS FOR 2024

The USA continues to be the one of the largest pools of talent in the BMX Race world with an ever-increasing number of young talented riders emerging each year. However, it has been difficult at times for these athletes to make the transition from competing domestically to successfully competing on an international level. In 2023, ODI and Connor Fields teamed up to do their part in helping to bridge this gap by assembling the first ever CFP program with the goal of assisting the most promising young BMX athletes in their goal to make it to the next level by offering support as they compete in the UCI events. In addition to the direct Cash for Podiums, the riders had an open line of communication to Connor to ask any questions they had about the transition from amateur to professional. We are proud to report that the inaugural year was a resounding success.

In sport, there is one absolute truth: Father time is undefeated. It doesn’t matter the sport, the country, or the athletes, there is a cyclical process of young athletes coming in and pushing out the older generation. Sometimes it is with new techniques and new styles like James Stewart inventing the ‘bubba scrub’ in motocross. Sometimes it is new training philosophies or approaches, sometimes it is just outright talent, or sometimes the older generation just ages out. The generational change is coming in BMX racing too. Kye Whyte, Izaac Kennedy, Cameron Wood, Cedric Butti, Asuma Nakai, 20 young French kids, and the rest of the younger generation are coming. They will inevitably become the dominant group to claim all the major titles year after year, but at this point the Junior class of 1991 and 1992 is doing everything it can to not allow that transition just yet.

If that looks like a stacked moto, that is because it is! What does every rider in this Junior Elite moto have in common? Every one of them has won a UCI World Cup. That list represents 7 UCI World Championships (11 if you count time trials), 11 USA BMX titles, 3 Olympic Medals, 6 UCI World Cup titles, over 175 USA BMX wins, and 34 UCI World Cup wins.

In the history of the UCI BMX World Cup series (that I can find records for on www.bmx-results.com) there have been a total of 87 World Cup races run. Of those 87, 34 have been won by that group. That is roughly 40% of every world cup. The winningest rider in UCI World Cup history, Niek Kimmann, has won 15% of every World Cup raced, ever, and Maris Strombergs (tied for second all-time with 2 on the list above) has won 9% of every World Cup raced, ever. We will break down the significance of those two riders later. If you remove those two riders from this equation, the group above has won well over half of the UCI World Cups in history.

Let’s be real, BMX racing is not the most common sport. If my mother had not found a flyer advertising the local BMX track, my life would look very different. I would not be writing this article, and someone else would have won the 2016 Olympic games. The greatest BMX racer of all time may be from a small village in northern Finland, but they never discovered BMX racing and therefore never became the greatest. There is an element of chance involved with discovering BMX, having a track nearby, and having the ability to pursue it. In 1991 and 1992 there were a group of young boys born around the world that would be on a collision course to change the landscape of BMX racing forever.

Before we get into my theories as to why the class of 91/92 was so successful let’s take it back to 2008.

In 2008 as BMX racing made its Olympic debut, the current generation of dominant riders included names like: Kyle Bennett, Mike Day, Donny Robinson, Randy Stumpfhouser, Thomas Allier, Bubba Harris, Robert De Wilde, Sifiso Nhalapo, Raymond Van Der Biezen, Khalen Young, Marc Willers, and a surging Maris Strombergs to name a few. These athletes were tasked with the difficult transition of learning how to adapt to the supercross style racing as the big hills started to show up at races around 2005. When all these riders turned pro, races were held exclusively on traditional style tracks.

In the lead up to the Beijing Olympics, there were a limited number of SX tracks available worldwide. If my memory serves me correctly, I think it was Aigle Switzerland, Chula Vista, a hill and straight in Papendal, and Luke Madill’s house in Sydney Australia. Not many options to hone your SX skills. In my opinion, this is part of the reason the U.S. team was so successful in Beijing, as Mike claimed Silver and Donny claimed Bronze. They had the best track (by far) to prepare on around the world. Rumor has it that the guy who won Gold snuck onto the track a few mornings at the crack of dawn to get some laps, but that’s just a rumor that has never been confirmed.

In the coming years SX style tracks exploded around the world and were built at a rapid pace, allowing more access for riders. That current generation was already on the older side, with many of the top riders in their mid to late 20’s, but no one could have ever anticipated just how quickly they would be pushed out by the class of 1991/1992.

2009 was the beginning of the transition, as a surging Sam Willoughby claimed the UCI World Cup title as a Junior Elite. Think about that for a second and imagine that happening today. A Junior Elite winning the senior elite world cup title. The 2009 UCI World Cup in Chula Vista featured not one, but two Junior Elite men on the podium including a first-year junior. Five Junior elite riders made it to the semis. No one knew what was coming, but the shift had already begun.

In the next couple years, as the class of 1991 and 1992 graduated to the Elite class in 2010 and 2011 and they pushed out the current generation in their respective countries much quicker than anticipated and grabbed the reigns of BMX racing. They would go on to keep a firm hold on it for the next thirteen years. They have yet to let go.

In my opinion, there are four ‘major’ titles currently available in BMX racing. The Olympics, UCI World Championships, UCI World Cup title, and USA BMX title. From 2011 to 2022 there were 38 ‘major’ titles available. Of the 38 available over the past twelve years, there were only five riders NOT born in 1991 or 1992 to win anything, and up until 2021, a decade after the move up, that number was only FOUR. Three of those riders, Maris Strombergs, Marc Willers, and Liam Phillips were older, already Olympians, and established when the class of 91/92 moved up. That means only two riders have been able to break through the wall put up by 91/92 and earn a title. Niek Kimmann and Simon Marquart. Oddly enough, Liam Phillips is the coach for both Niek Kimmann and Simon Marquart. He must have given them the secret for how to break through that wall. Maris won three major titles in 2010, (Worlds, World cup, and the old NBL title) and would only go on to win two more majors, the Olympics in 2012 and USA BMX in 2014. You would have to go all the way back to 2009 to get to a title won by the previous generation. That is 13 years and 39 total titles won by a group of just ten riders. 27 out of 39 (70%) of those won by the class of 91/92.

Why was the class of 1992 so successful? I have three theories …

1: Sheer, dumb luck. The riders who had natural talent and ability found the sport, had an opportunity to pursue it, and it led to the greatness.

2: The depth of the class forced every rider to step up and push from a young age. When you are forced to compete against other great riders, you have no choice but to improve your skills, work harder, and get better if you want to compete. Iron sharpening iron.

a: Anthony Dean and Sam Willoughby grew up battling in Australia and I am sure there were other good riders as well, forcing them to continue to improve if they wanted to compete.

b: I can speak to the competition level in the U.S. I wholeheartedly believe that growing up competing against Corben and Tory (among others) forced us all to get better. I don’t believe I would have been the rider I was without their help.

3: They got serious at the right time and developed their skills the right way. This is the most complex theory of them all. The riders in the 91/92 class found out BMX was going to be in the Olympics in 2005 at 12 and 13 years old. We watched the Olympic debut in Beijing in 2008 at 16 and 17 years old. Growing up we rode because we loved it. We rode dirt jumps, skateparks, and rode for the love of it. If we worked hard, if was because we wanted to win the next race. We found out that the opportunity to go to the Olympics was there at a time when we were physically able to start getting serious and we had developed the base of our skill. This also helped avoid burnout in the long run.

Which one do I think it is? I believe it is a combination of all three. The perfect storm!

There may never be a class like this again. A truly generational shift that changed the game in so many ways, building a barrier that few were able to get through. Look at any Olympic, World Cup, or World Championship final between 2010-2021 and you will see at least half of the spots in the gate occupied by the class of 1991/1992. Look at any podium from the past decade and it will likely be a couple 91/92 riders and some combination of Maris, Liam, Niek, Simon, Carlos, Graf, and Nic Long. Of the top 10 all time in World Cup finals participation, 7 are from the class of 91/92 alongside Niek, Maris, and Graf.

As for the women? Mariana Pajon and Alise Post were born in 1991.

Grips, the most intimate and tactile part of our BMX bikes, are often overlooked … in terms of importance anyway. Your prized bike could very well be loaded with the best of the best parts but if the grips aren’t right, don’t feel just perfect, you and the bike won’t get on. ODI understand this better than most, and to date they have only trusted two Pro BMX racers with the task of designing grips for the mass market … Strombergs, and now Connor Fields, the man who may just understand the intricacies of BMX better than anyone we’ve talked too.

Connor Fields and ODI have now been in cahoots for three years with the goal of producing the best BMX racing grip available, ‘ODI has always been a massive supporter of BMX racing, and it isn’t a super common thing for major companies to do signature BMX racing products with athletes, so I feel honored and thankful that they allowed me to create a product. It was a fun experience!’ Connor told us, ‘Combining ODI’s knowledge of building and tooling grips with a few top athletes’ knowledge of what their sport demands they have the ability to come up with grips that are a step above what else is currently available.’

Connor has been supported by ODI since joining Chase BMX in 2011, resulting in a good friendship with the ‘main guy’ at ODI. The conversation initially stared between the two with the idea of developing ‘something fun, fresh, and new for BMX racing’ … ‘we were talking about the Vans grips I currently rode and what I did and did not like about them’ … ‘we began experimenting and working on things in 2019’.

The first step in the design process was to dial in the feel, ‘we experimented with things like diameter, material, softness, stickiness, depth of the indents, among other things’ … ‘I changed grips in 2015 to a thicker grip. So, the diameter is similar to that of a Vans grip. It’s not the thickest ODI makes, but it is a touch thicker than the average grip. I felt more in control and like I didn’t have to squeeze as hard with a larger diameter grip, so that is why we went in that direction’.

From there, the team dialled in the pattern depth and texture. ‘The grip features a carbon fiber weave pattern that we tested different depths on. The goal was to get the maximum feel while remaining comfortable and soft on the hands. I was able to experiment with different pattern depths to identify the one I felt worked best’ … ‘ODI mailed me different prototypes throughout the last couple of years that I was able to try out both on and off the bike. I would estimate we went through around 8 prototypes.’ The observant among you will now have realised the grips name has a double meaning … Connor Fields and Carbon Fibre … CF11!

Once the high-level design was agreed upon, Connor and ODI dived into the details, ‘The other unique thing I created was the 3 finger cut outs’ Connor told us, ‘The finger cut outs are designed to be used a couple different ways. For me, I put them right where my fingertips sit and they give me a bit of added grip and traction when I pull hard on the bars, like out of the gate. They are also a good reminder of where you want to set your hands on the gate. Another thing I wanted to do was create a way to make the grip customizable to each rider. If you try them under your palm, or even under your knuckles they can add a bit more grip there rather than your fingertips. If you don’t like them, you can rotate them around to the back where you won’t feel them. That will be for each rider to test and see what they like best, which I think is really cool. I also didn’t want an outside lock ring. That is one of the main issues I had with the Vans grips I currently run. The outside lock ring wasn’t comfortable for me to hold. The outside of the CF grip is smooth and comfortable to hold on to.’

The lock on system used here is the latest ODI have developed for motocross … the V2.1 system, the first signature BMX grip to utilise the technology.

The bar-end of the CF11 Grips feature a small piece of carbon fiber, ‘to keep your bike looking as dialed as possible’, and it’s here where you can add you own personal flare. Initially, to go with the black grips, the bar ends will come with yellow or mint (Chase colour). The grips will also come in red or blue with white details. More colours should come online in the future.

The first run of the new CF11 ODI Grips is due in February, although an exact date hasn’t been scheduled just yet … ‘partially due to what the whole world is dealing with … supply chain issues. I am sure everyone is tired of hearing about it by now, but that has been the biggest problem we have faced. We decided to release them as soon as we have them, even if we don’t have as much as we may like, just to start giving people the chance to get a set’.

The goal is a $42.99 price, but it may change with raw material price fluctuations. Connor concedes that the price is a little higher than other grips available but highlights that ‘we really pushed the boundaries of what is possible on a grip, and these will have some unique details you won’t find anywhere else’.

While the soon to be released, CF11 ODI Grips certainly sound impressive, and clearly look awesome, we hope to get our hands on a set when they become available for an in-depth look … but until then we’ll leave the last word to the Olympic Gold medallist who designed them, Connor Fields.

‘It has been an awesome experience to design something from scratch and go through that process. I rode them a bit in 2021, away from the races of course, but loved them! I like cars, and we used those as inspiration, mainly a Lamborghini Centenario. Lamborghinis aren’t known for being the most cozy or comfortable, but they are known for handling, performance, and being some of the best cars out there. That is what I wanted to go for here, a sleek looking grip that was designed for maximum performance and the right balance of padding for comfort while also still providing maximum feedback. A grip for riders who want to go fast and win. I know grips are a very personal part of the bike, as it is the main contact point and critical for feeling, but I hope that other riders appreciate and enjoy what I helped create’.

Gary Ellis and Pete Longcarevich. That’s it! That is the list of male BMX racers who have earned four total USA BMX (then ABA) Pro titles. However, that statistic is not without an asterisk. Before many of the Pros racing today were born, Gary won the title in 1995 despite not finishing the series with the most points. What? How does that work? Well at that time, the ABA (American Bicycle Association) had a rule in the rulebook stating that the title could not be won by a non-American born rider. No non-American had even come close, so it wasn’t an issue. However, in 1995, Frenchman, Christophe Leveque, the current owner of Chase Bicycles and US-Probikes, finished the year with the most points but was not declared the winner due to that rule. The ABA changed the rulebook the following year, opening the title to winners born outside of the United States. Since then, there have been 25 titles awarded, and foreign-born riders have taken advantage of the rule change. Fourteen titles have been won by foreign born racers compared to eleven by American born racers. Christophe made up for 1995 by winning two overall titles, 1998 and 1999, and although his trophy shelf only has two cups, it should really have three, as should Gary Ellis’s. If you count Gary and Christophe as holders of three cups, they would be joined by Bubba Harris, Sam Willoughby, Joris Daudet, and myself as 3-time champions. At the 2021 Grand Nationals, there are two riders mathematically up for the chance to become a 4-time champion and write their name in the history books as the second person, or third depending on your opinion, in history to earn four overall championships. They are Joris Daudet, and me. I can guarantee with 100% certainty that I will not be winning this year’s championship, so that leaves only one person with the opportunity, Joris Daudet.

However, I can say that the USA BMX Grand Nationals and overall title chase does fall into that category, and I would consider myself as knowledgeable as it gets. 2010 was the last time an AA Pro main event was raced in Tulsa without me on the gate, and since 2012 I have stood on every AA Pro Grand National podium. Both, I believe to be record streaks. Every season except one since, (I only raced one race in 2016) I competed in the series finishing no worse than 3rd overall, amounting to eight overall series podiums with three overall titles. All this experience has led me to amass a large amount of knowledge on the topic, and my goal with this is to give anyone reading this a better understanding of how this title works, what to watch for in Tulsa, and how the championships are won …

The Pro Men’s title …

To fully understand this, you must understand how the series points system works. Your 8 best finishes plus the Grands count as your series points. Each position at a national is a 40-point difference. 240 for a win, 200 for 2nd, and so on. However, finishing 7th or 8th nets you 30 and 20 respectively. You also get rider points. What are rider points? You also get 1 point for each rider signed up to race. A win with 25 riders in the class is worth 265 points. The idea here is that the races with more riders are more valuable. A win with 40 riders (280 points) is worth more than a win with 10 riders (250 points.) Grands is worth double points, 480 for the win.

Each spot at Grands represents an 80-point differential until you get to 7th and 8th which will be worth 60 and 40. Everyone will get the same rider count points just for signing up. As it stands now, if Josh Mclean was to win the Grands and earn the full 480 points, Joris would only need 3rd overall and the 320 points that comes with to clinch the win. Josh winning would mean Joris needs 4th or worse to give Josh the title. As it stands, Joris has a two position buffer. This can change however, with the R.O.C. being a last chance for points. Joris has maxed out his wins this year with eight so he cannot improve his position. Josh however, only has four wins so he can improve his position with a win, moving him to within 160 points, meaning Joris drops to a one position buffer.

Here is where it gets tricky, and I would assume Josh/Joris may be doing a bit of math on Thursday morning. I know I would. Josh could theoretically replace a current 2nd with another 2nd if the rider count at the R.O.C. is more than the score he has now. For example, if he has a 2nd with 20 riders currently in his points, and the R.O.C. has 32 or more, a 2nd place could replace that, and it would be enough to bring him within the 160 points needed to cut Joris’s buffer to 1. At this point there is no way Josh can bring it to within 80, meaning a ‘heads-up’ whoever beats the other race.

So Joris or Joshua for the title …

It is BMX racing, and anything can happen. If Joris unclips in the Semi or just gets an outright 5th place in a semi, and Josh makes the main, Josh only needs a 4th or better to leapfrog him. 5th or better if he can cut the lead to within 160 at the R.O.C. It is unlikely, but we have seen things like this before. In 2014 Sam had a similar lead over Maris to what Joris currently holds over Josh, but failed to make the final and Maris was able to capitalize and win both the Grands and the title.

In the past year Joris and Josh have raced each other at Grands (2020), Phoenix, Alabama, Rock Hill, Atlanta, South Park and Louisville for a total of thirteen times head-to-head. Joris has finished the day ahead of Josh at ten of them. Josh was able to finish ahead of Joris three times. Let’s take a look at those three as an example and see if those results would be enough to overcome the current points deficit Josh faces at the Grands if they happened again Friday night in Tulsa. On day one in Rock Hill Josh finished 6th to Joris’s 7th. Not enough. In Atlanta day one Josh Finished 2nd to Joris’s 4th. Not enough. In Atlanta on day two Joris got a flat tire while in the lead, finishing 8th to Josh’s 5th. None of these would be enough to overcome the points gap if the same result happened in Tulsa. In the past year, even when Josh beat Joris, Joris holds a perfect 13/13 rate in staying close enough to Josh to hold the buffer if the same result happened at the Grands. For Josh to win the title he will have to do something he has not done in the past year.

The Grands is run with a 3 main event format, leading to consistency paying off and less randomness. Based on the statistics above, this would seem to play into Joris’s favor. While statistically it seems unlikely Josh will be able to pull this off we have to remember it is BMX and anything can happen. Joris makes one mistake in a quarter or semi that can be all it takes. There is also the possibility of a take-out happening, which can affect the outcome. It has happened before. In 2002 Danny Nelson won the title over Warwick Stevenson after Danny’s teammate escorted Warwick off the track. Joris tried this on me in 2017 in the second main event (Video HERE). When upwards of $30,000 or more depending on bonuses are on the line, these things should be expected, and I don’t blame anyone who tries. In my opinion, this would be Josh’s best bet. Keep an eye on this in the Quarters or Semis if they are in the same moto together …

Is Cameron Wood to far back to influence the title outcome …

Currently he is 449 back on Joris, and 277 on Josh. Remember, he does have the R.O.C. opportunity to improve his score and cut these down a bit. As it currently stands, he would have to win to have any shot at the title. A second or worse and he would not catch Joris even if Joris didn’t race. If Cameron is able to win and Joris misses out on making the main, Cameron still needs to beat Josh by four positions to pass him. So, Cameron could win the title by winning, Josh 5th or worse, and Joris missing the final, as it currently stands. In his first two seasons as a Pro, Cameron has one win to his name and it happened at his home track. He would need to get his first win away from his home track to have a shot at the title.

I would think he would be more focused on trying to leapfrog me (currently 197 points back) by getting 4th or better and then hoping Josh doesn’t make the final and passing him as well. A lot must happen for him to win, but it is BMX and like we have already established, anything can happen, and he has a chance.

The Euro Pro effect …

There are a few effects the Euro pros will or can have. Especially when it is two experienced and fast riders like Simon Marquart and Romain Mahieu. What could turn out to be the biggest effect they will have in the outcome of the 2021 USA BMX Grands and overall championship may have already happened though. It happened in Tokyo …

There are a couple other ways they could have an effect. First off, by being fast and making the qualifying rounds harder to advance through for Joris, Josh, and Cameron. If Simon finishes 4th in a semi and Joris 5th, he essentially just took Joris’s spot in the main. They also could offer riders to fill the buffer Josh is looking for. If Josh wins, Simon and/or Romain could be the riders who get in-between him and Joris to give him the spread needed. Although, I think it is unlikely with those two, and here’s why.

When I would go into the Grands and have an ‘ally’ in the gate we would be aware of the points. If the title came down to Trent Jones or Izaac Kennedy (my training partners and close friends) beating me or not in the 3rd main I would expect them to help me out. As I would do the same for them. This hasn’t happened in BMX in recent memory, but this happens all the time in Supercross/Motocross, F1, and other racing sports with teammates helping each other. Romain is close with Joris, often staying at his house, … if Joris needed a bit of help in the main events, you would have to think there is a chance Romain may help out…

Will the Euro Pros adapt to the USA BMX track …

Off the top of my head, since Randy Stumpfhouser in 2009 the overall title winner has only lost the Grands race twice. 2016 and 2019. In both years the overall title winners (Joris and myself) finished 2nd overall at the Grands. Most of the top Euro’s (European based, I don’t count Joris as he is American Based) over the years have come and raced the Grands and many have done well, but none have been able to win. Kimmann, Whyte, Evans, Andre, Rencuel, Mayet, Mahieu, Mir, and more, have raced the Grands at some point in the past few seasons. The tracks are slightly different but at the end of the day fast riders that are capable of winning, are capable anywhere. Randy who won in 2009 was the last rider to win that didn’t also race SX. Since then, from 2010 through now, the Grands winner has won at least one SX race in the same year that they won the Grands every year except for 2015, Joris, and 2016, Anthony Dean. Joris is proven on both SX and flat hills. Anthony, although he has never won an SX, had a handful of podiums proving he could do it on both. Romain has been to the Grands a number of times so he knows what it is all about, but this will be Simon’s first time I believe. It will be interesting to see how he does. I expect he will do well.

Right now, it’s a 76 point differential. Alise could extend it above 80 if she wins the R.O.C. and it can improve her rider point score by 4 riders. Keep an eye on that because if Alise wins the R.O.C and gets that buffer, then if Felicia wins the Grands with Alise in 2nd, there will be a lot of confusion as to why Alise won the title.

I think it is safe to say Felicia was faster than Alise at the Grands last year but being faster isn’t everything. Alise outsmarted Felicia on her way to what was her seemingly 100th USA BMX title. Since Tokyo, Felicia has been on a roll, and Alise has been taking some well-deserved time off, at least from what is shown on social media, so we don’t know just how prepared she will be. Alise has all the experience and knows how to win championships while Felicia is hungry for her first. Get your popcorn ready as this could go either way.

Lauren and Ashley are within 480 and up for it in the same way as Wood.
I have already detailed how important it is points wise, but as far as psychologically I think that comes down to the individual. I don’t think it will affect Joris or Alise one bit, as they are experienced and older. In 2015 it was a heads-up race with Me, Sam, and Joris all within 80 points. I won the R.O.C., Sam got 2nd, and Joris got 5th. 24-hours later Joris came and won the Grands and the title over Sam and me. In that case, the R.O.C. didn’t mean anything either way. Perhaps it could with some of the other riders, particularly the younger ones, but in BMX we have all developed a short memory and the ability to move on to the next race.

Academically speaking, how would a fit Connor approach Tulsa in his current points position …

I have never actually been in this position where I would need a specific set of things to happen. I am lucky that the four times I was realistically up for the title, I was always in front or within 80 so it all came down to who beat who on the day. Other years I was more in a similar position to what Wood or Reynolds are in now. If I was racing though, my main goal first would be to win the R.O.C. and close the gap. However, if it stayed like this and I would do whatever it took to win the Grands and close the gap. Like I mentioned earlier, there is some real money on the line for this championship If it came down to escorting someone off of the track in a quarter or semi, I would do it. I was 100% ok and understood questionable moves being done to me, so I would do the exact same thing if that was what it took to get the job done. The check clears either way!

I want to start by providing some background. 2013-2016 was the best time in the history of the sport for USA BMX prize money and pro racing excitement. There were multiple races a year paying $7000 per day for the win, and we would routinely see total pots of $10,000 plus. These were some of the highest pay-outs in the sport and pro racing was booming in America during this period. When the UCI mandated equal pay regardless of number of entries, USA BMX decided to cut the pay-out, up to 66% for the Elite men. From 2017-2020 USA BMX pay was at some of its lowest in history and pro racing immediately suffered as we saw a decline in participants, excitement, and international athletes coming over to compete. It was a very unfortunate situation for the pros as well as aspiring pros in the older amateur classes.

With that said, 2021 brought about change and a renewed commitment to pro racing in the U.S. USA BMX rolled out an all-new format with things like return to scaled pay, eliminating A pro, and adding the B mains. Was everything they rolled out perfect? Of course not, but I think the focus should be on the fact that there was effort put forth to revamp professional racing and provide an avenue for pro BMX racers to earn a living racing BMX. It will likely take a season or two to work out all the kinks, but there has been progress made, which I think should still be the focus.

Specifically addressing the B mains, I think they are a good idea in theory, however there are some issues with them. The pay-out is such that holeshotting and winning the B main earns you more than 7th or 8th in the A main. Not sure who forgot their calculator that day, but it is an obvious mistake. Also, the fact that the B main has a podium ceremony at all as well as a holeshot award diminishes the actual A main and what it means to qualify for that. I appreciate the promotion of the pros, and we need all we can get, but the rider who places 4th in the A main deserves more recognition than the winner of the B main, and that isn’t happening.

‘I think it’s ok to have B Finals. One more lap to gain a few bucks. One more lap represent your sponsors. One more lap to get some experience. If those events had 7 laps like in the World Cup, I’d get it. But racing 4 or 5 laps a day doesn’t make a big difference to me.

My ‘driving force’ has changed and evolved many times throughout my career. I have been lucky enough to compete at the highest level for nearly 12 years, and continuing for this long would not have been possible without a shift in perspective, motivation, and purpose.

Being the young up and comer is in my opinion the most fun and exciting part of a career. I remember back in 2008-2010 when I was 15-17 years old, I wanted nothing more in the world than to be a Pro BMX racer. I was so singularly focused and allowed BMX to completely consume my every thought. I didn’t care about money, I didn’t care about risk, all I wanted was to be a pro and ‘live the dream’. That was my driving force. Racing at this stage of your career is so much fun. When you win or have a good day you feel like the happiest person on earth, but when you lose you feel like the world is ending and the sun is never coming back out. It isn’t sustainable, but it is definitely an exciting time. There are always athletes I can see going through this process now and it is fun to watch, and brings back some good, and not so good, memories.

From there, once you reach a certain level of success you start to feel like you’ve ‘made it’ to an extent, and then comes the challenge of sustaining it. Once you win or are on the podium a couple times you start to feel like you should be there every time, and if you don’t it is a failure. This is when the ‘expectation’ or ‘fear of failure’ phase started for me. This also coincided with growing up a bit, moving out on my own, and realizing how expensive life is. When you are young and up-and-coming it is easy to focus purely on the uninterrupted love of the sport and truly try to ‘live the dream’. However, as you get older and life away from the BMX track changes and evolves, things can become more complicated.

For whatever reason talking about money is a bit taboo in our sport and people think it is weird for someone to say they are here to get paid. There is a culture around doing it for the love of the sport and celebrating being on a shoestring budget. To each their own and everyone is free to do what they wish, but after London 2012, I put being compensated appropriately at the top of my priority list. In addition to that I had goals I wanted to achieve that were specific, such as win a USA BMX title or win an Olympic Gold Medal. Luckily, you could kill two birds with one stone as winning these coincided with handsome paydays, so for the next few years these were my daily motivation.

Then comes another change, once you have achieved your goals then how do you motivate yourself? Do it again and back it up? Money? Proving ‘the haters’ wrong? Sure, a little bit of all of those are a factor, but ultimately this is when I noticed the biggest change. After my TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) in 2018 when I lay on the track in Oldsmar having a full-on seizure, I was forced to look at things and figure out if the money, free product, and ticking of goals really made it all worth it. I came inches away from walking away from the sport because I did not find any motivation with these things anymore. A flight booked at 9am to depart the same day at 5pm to Australia in April of 2018, to reunite with my long-time coach Sean Dwight, saved me from stepping away, but that’s a story for another time…

From here I had to find new motivation, and for me that was the process. This sounds so cheesy, but it has truly become the case. Don’t get me wrong, I still care about the final result and want to win (and get paid), but I have learned how to love the process of being the best I can possibly be then executing under extreme pressure to get the job done. That is the best feeling of all.

Don’t get me wrong, I love BMX! It is my first love, and I don’t remember a time before it. I enjoy riding my bike, manualing a rhythm, or smashing some gates with the boys… but I am older now, and have evolved. I also enjoy spending time with my family. I enjoy business, other sports, traveling (without a bike) and many other non-BMX related things too. What drives me has changed throughout my career and until the final gate drop, I am sure it will continue to evolve…
