French club, BMX Sarrians, lost GT Bicycles as their major sponsor when the brand shut up shop in late 2024, leaving the door open for a deal with California’s Supercross BMX. We believe the discussions have been ongoing for some time but clearly both have now reached agreement. The deal see’s BMX Sarrians land a BMX giant, while Supercross extends it’s reach further into Europe. Just last week the company added Kye Whyte to the team!

Obviously some Sarrians riders, such as Leo, already have a personal bike deal, so we expect the riders on Supercross frames and Speedline parts to be:

We’ve recently gotten our hands on a production set of the extremely slick Speedline Elite Hollow Carbon Cranks, and we’ve fallen in love … all over again! For the last year (see here) we have been using a pre-production sample of the cranks and have had zero issues … they’ve been flawless. The only differences we can see with the production set is a graphical change on the rear of the cranks and an upgrade in the product finish … not that the finish of our pre-production set was an issue.

​The cranks are designed and built for a fully formed human, no weight limits, just weight savings. Compared to the most popular alloy crank set you are saving more than 200 grams. That’s a significant saving, a saving you can feel! They also feel stiffer. Obviously, ‘feel’ is personal, but we’re confident in saying the ‘feel is real’.

The Speedline Elite Hollow Carbon Cranks come with everything needed to get rolling, the carbon cranks and four bolt spider, pedal washers, an oversized 30mm spindle, a Euro bottom bracket, a bottom bracket tool, a quality allen key, and a crank removal tool … now all you need to do is get your hands on a polished CXP Racing (review here) chainring to dial up the blink level to 15!

Given everything that comes in the kit, set up is straightforward. Everything went together with ease for both our pre, and production sets, make sure you have BB spacers on hand to diall in that chain line. The included EB30 bottom bracket is light and smooth, we guess you could upgrade to ceramic, to go with the carbon, but again we’ve no issues with the included one.

The cranks are hand laid with Torray Nano Alloy Carbon and to quote Speedline Parts, they are then ‘high compaction moulded to form the lightest and stiffest crank structure on the market. Add in the oversized 30mm Spindle, and you have the best power transfer possible! Its Carbon Fiber spider features special layers of carbon titanium composites along with its 7075 aluminium insert to maximize power transfer and minimize weight’.

The Speedline Elite Hollow Carbon Cranks are available in 165mm, 170mm, 175mm and 180mm sizes and come in any colour once it’s gloss or matt black. We wouldn’t be surprized if Speedline offer sporadic colour options in the future. We should also note that Speedline Parts have just released a Mini version, and while we’ve not laid our hands on them, we have no reason to suspect any quality or performance differences to their big brother.

As you’d expect, the Speedline Elite Hollow Carbon Cranks are not cheap. The come in at a whopping €699.95 … but if you are looking for the cutting edge of crank technology in BMX, then this is it. Stiffer, lighter, and cooler … with no rider weight limit, a gamechanger …

​The 2022 Test Bike … Fifteen’s Bike Evolution

Over the last couple of years, we have been getting a steady stream of requests for a detailed look at our personal bike of choice, but we’ve never really gotten around to it. But now that we’ve just built a new one we thought it’s time we fulfilled those requests and give you a detailed look at the latest Fifteen test bike … in our own bike check, of sorts. While we’ve not ridden it enough to form a fully reasoned opinion just yet, spoiler alert, we’re already in love …

The Fifteen test bike represents an ongoing experiment in search of the perfect personal machine. To date, it’s the best combination of components we’ve tried, been asked to try out or officially test, and parts that we’ve just been using for years and love. It’s an evolving experiment …

Up until recently had been bolting all our parts to the Supercross BLK2 Carbon XL frame (see our review here) and while, admittedly, it’s the only carbon frame we’ve ridden for extended periods of time, it was light years ahead of aluminium frames we’ve owned and loved! Then this stunning Supercross Vision F1 turned up at our door and we reluctantly put the BLK2 to one side and started to build this new carbon sculpture. The Vision F1 is not an evolution of the BLK, it’s a completely new beast, it’s designed with disc brakes in mind, although V-Brakes work too, it’s got a fixed rear-end, albeit with two length options via the ‘flip chips’, but more interestingly to us at least, is that it’s one piece of carbon, not a bunch of sections glued together. It should be lighter (it is), stiffer (it is) and just all around better (it is) … The BLK is simpler, and we do really like that about it, but the Vision F1 is just more advanced, more evolved. We haven’t quite put our finger on what it is yet, but it just feels slicker … we’re still getting to grips with it.

The Vision F1 comes as a ‘Chassis Kit’ and contains the Vision F1 Frame, matching 20mm carbon forks with 10mm adapters, a hydraulic disc brake adapter kit, a mechanical disc brake adapter arm, removable V-Brake mounts, two sets of Flip-Chips (one 15mm set and one 10mm set), a chain idler/guide and a sealed bearing headset. That’s a lot! And to be honest it’s a bit of a task to figure it all out, but once you wrap your head around it, it all goes together as intended.

Up in the cockpit we, reluctantly, had to give up our Supercross Carbon BMX Pro Bars and the Speedline Matrix Carbon Stem as we encountered a fit issue with the latest variation of the Shimano XTR leaver, we’re looking into other options of leaver but in the meantime, we’re rocking our previous Supercross ‘Huge’ bars and our all-time favourite alloy stem, the Thompson 48mm BMX Stem with upgraded titanium bolts.

Grips are the ODI Ruffians, just because … Obviously, grips are so much better when they are almost worn out, but unfortunately we had to replace our overly worn set recently. We’re about 6 months away from wornout nirvana again.

When sitting on berms observing, one of our favourite past times, we’re doing it on a Tioga D-Spyder S-Spec saddle. We’re tried lots of different saddles but always return to this work of art. We want to try the D-Spyder Evo saddle and post combo … yep, we’re always trying to save some grams! The seat is attached to a Supercross Pivotal post that we’ve taken a hacksaw too, and the clamp is of the Speedline Quick Release variety.

Normally, the one part that you would have to drag from our ‘cold dead hands’ is a Hawk Racing bottom bracket. We’ve tried many different ceramic options, but out of the box we’ve yet to find anything close. But now we’ve gotten our hands on the new Speedline Elite Hollow Carbon Fibre Race Cranks and their 30mm spindle so we’ve had to switch to the included bottom bracket … so far so good. The carbon cranks are potentially a game changer, phenomenally light and stiff when compared to alloy. When we’ve had some more hours on them, we’ll publish a review, but so far we’re impressed.

On the chainring front we’re torn between the Michram Industries S-Series (review here) and the CXP Racing Chainrings (review here). We love both for different reasons and regularly switch. The CXP Chainring is threaded and with the added thickness of the Carbon spider we didn’t have bolts long enough this time but we’re looking for some. When it comes to pedals, we find ourselves on the flat variety more often than not meaning we’re on our aging Nukeproofs, in reality they are a generic alloy BMX / MTB pedal that can be found with lots of different branding. We think some Crank Bros. Stamp 7’s may be in our future. On the days we want to go a little faster we’re rocking the BMX specific, Shimano DXR clipless PD-MX70, love the reduced float!

Callipers wise we’ve got the 2 pot Shimano XTR to match the leaver, no one in BMX needs the stopping power of the four-pot variety, and why add the weight! We’re only a few weeks into the disc brake world (yes, we were late to the party) and we may be missing the simplicity of our V-Brakes, we’re still undecided.

We’ve been running Sunn Ringle Envy rims for years, easily our favourite alloy rims, but now we’ve been lucky enough to acquire some Speedline Carbon Slasher rims, they look trick and save a tonne of weight. Combine those with our tyre of choice, the Tioga Powerblock S-Spec, still the lightest out there with all the grip you need, and the intriguingly light Tubolito Tubes and we’ve reduced rolling resistance by a massive amount! We’ve laced, well Team 65 Racing Supplies laced our Slashers to the new Speedline Killer Buzz hubs (see here), and they are loud! We’ve come from the silence of the ubiquitous of Onyx hubs so we’re adjusting. The rear wheel is driven by a KMC 10 speed chain, it’s light and we trust them.

All that adds up to a combined weight of … approx. 7.25Kgs / 16Ibs … the evolution continues.

We’ve only had the new Speedline Killer Buzz hubs for a couple of weeks, but since they are now filtering out to the public we though we’d give you our thoughts …

Up until now we have been living in a sensory deprived world, in silence … but Speedline Parts are bringing back the noise with their new Killer Buzz Hubs … the clue was always in the name! The buzz in the hub is courtesy of the ‘worm drive’, no springs, no clutch and definitely no paws! To be honest that’s where out technical insight on the worm drive ends, we’re not going to regurgitate something off the internet or direct from Speedline, we don’t know how it works, but it does, and it does it well. The hub is solid too, there doesn’t seem to be anything there that we could easily break, but, it comes apart, if needed, with a simple pull and goes back together just as easily, Like we said, it’s solid and well designed! Did we mention they are loud? Well they are … and it’s a unique buzzzzzz too.

The hubs don’t claim to be instant engagement but rather ‘near instant’, but they are so ‘near’ that it’s a moot point really. The rear hub weights in at 400g for the V-Brake version and our Disc version tipped our scales at 420g (not including a cog). Colourwise, you can have them in any one you want, once it’s black … more colours coming soon we believe. The rear axle is 10mm but will work on 15mm dropouts with the included adapters and they are Shimano compatible.

We have only been spinning the rear hub for a couple of weeks now, so we are not claiming this to be a full review but rather an ongoing project. So far, we’ve been impressed, the Speedline Killer Buzz hubs look slick, the rolling resistance is minimal and they are bedding in nicely. Speedline claim ‘less rolling resistance’ than others but we’ve no real way to verify that other than to tell you that they feel smooth cruising down the third straight rhythm section. We guess the real question here is … do you want an audience, or do you want to hide in the shadows.

Speedline Elite Hollow Pro Cranks | Review

Six months ago, when the new Speedline Elite Hollow Pro Cranks turned up out of the blue, we decided to take a different approach to the usual review process … we decided to live with the cranks for an extended period of time. We’d lived with our previous cranks, the ubiquitous DXRs for years and never had an issue. So, in order to recommend a different brand, we thought it best not to take a ‘run and gun’ approach … so we settled in, for the long haul.

The Speedline Elite Hollow Pro Cranks surprisingly include a Euro Bottom Bracket as standard but as we’d just recently installed a Hawk Racing one we opted to leave the bottom bracket in the box, for now.  The cranks installed quickly and easily, without the need for a specialised tool, if you’ve got a set of allen keys your good to go. Painless. Our bike also lost a little weight in the crank switch over process, which is always welcome, especially on a spinning part.

This set of Speedlines are the original gun mental with black accents, making them visually unique when compared to our previous cranks and although they are, from a distance, visually similar to the DXR’s, the sculpting is a little more refined, surfaces flow together a little better and the simpler design of the 4-bolt 104 BCD spider is, in our opinion, a little more modern. Currently the cranks are only available in the 175mm variety, but we believe 170 and 180mm versions are in tooling production as we speak … Covid19 has caused some delays, but they are coming.

On the first ride we didn’t expect them to ‘feel’ any different, but they did … and we haven’t put our finger on exactly why. It may be the touted ‘narrower Q-Factor’ although lots of brands claim the exact same thing. The Q-Factor, although we haven’t done measurement comparisons, is more than likely just different, hence the slightly different feel. Either way, an hour or so in and the Speedline Elite Hollow Pro Cranks were just the new normal. Stiff, very stiff in fact, and smooth … just what you’d expect from a $380 set of high-end cranks.

The included pedal washers have become slightly irritating, we’ve found ourselves searching on our hands and knees on a few occasions as we switch between flats and clips.  Once you remember that the washers are there it’s not really an issue … our problem is remembering. Speedline tell us that the washers are ‘not necessary but definitely recommended’ … we’ll stick with them.

And now, 6 months in, we’ve nothing of note to report. The Speedline Elite Hollow Pro Cranks are still stiff, still smooth, nothing has come loose, no creaking, no issues. We have started to see some slight ware on the painted surface where you inevitably rub your heal, but that’s about it. Given the choice we’d opt for the newly available polished version to avoid that slight paint abrasion but that’s just a personal choice. We’ve no desire to switch back to the aforementioned ubiquitous cranks, we like having something unique equipped. So, for now, and the foreseeable future, we’re running the Speedlines … happy in the knowledge we’ve got something light, reliable and, for now, unique, driving our bike forward …

Carbon handlebars in the world of BMX Racing are not a new thing, they have been a common component sought out by the Factory Dad in the development of the next Elite Superstar, but a Carbon handle bar for the current Elite Superstar … well now, that’s a rare commodity! Even rarer though, is a stem crafted from the same material for the same target audience, but Speedline Parts, the sister company to Supercross BMX, are about to unleash the first BMX specific Carbon Stem, the ‘Matrix Carbon Fibre Pro Stem’, a 170 gram, solid mix of Torray T700S and Torray T800 Carbon! And we’ve gotten our hands on one of the few pre-production units to escape Speedline HQ … and the only one that has, thus far, left the USA!

The new 31.8mm oversized carbon stem, with no rider weight limit, will combine perfectly fine with any oversized handlebar out there but the true intention here is for you to marry this engineering first with the recently released, Supercross BLK Pro Carbon Bars. Now you potentially have a BMX cockpit forged in BMX Nirvana! Luckily, we managed to abscond from Apple Valley with the bars too!

We are not going to rehash all the spec’s for the BLK Carbon Bars here, you can jump over to the Supercross site for those numbers. The carbon stem, on the other hand, is a new proposition. It’s an evolution of the alloy Speedline Elite Stem which was designed in conjunction with one Maris Strombergs, the guy with all the medals, so it already has that going for it. While the stem has some nice features and attention to detail, like a recess for steer tube spacers on its top surface and the addition of longer bolts in the rear (because of the extra available depth), it’s really all about the weight saving and increased stiffness. And for the size of product, the weight saving is impressive … you’re looking at about half the weight of a more traditional alloy stem. We should point out that despite the significant weight saving, the stem does not feel in any way flimsy, it actually feels like it would survive an encounter with a tank.  Supercross will also point out that they weren’t overly enthusiastic about the possibility of sharp edges on an alloy stem cutting into their beautifully sculpted BLK Carbon Bars, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the clamping area … and that, ultimately, may be the main driving force behind the Matrix stem.

While individually the carbon stem and bars are an attractive proposition, the real beauty here is when you step into the aforementioned BMX Nirvana, and go full carbon in the cockpit. The weight saving now creeps up to around 1 pound … a whole pound off the front end of your BMX race machine is definitely not to be sniffed at! It may take some time to adjust to the new weight distribution of your newly dialled bike, but when you do … wow!

The pre-production stem we acquired is the 54mm version but there will be a 48mm and a longer 60mm option, as well as two mini versions, a 36mm and a 42mm which are bound to be sure fire hits. And yes, it will be available in some sexy finishes but as of yet we’ve not been able to pry that information from Speedline. The graphics too are yet to be disclosed … but we’d expect them to have the same high-end simplicity as those found on the Carbon BLK handlebars. Graphics aside, the BLK Bars are a beautifully refined carbon sculpture, matching perfectly with the aesthetic of the Supercross BLK frame and forks … the problem you now face is that no chromoly set of bars will ever look at home on your carbon frame again. It’s the same queasy feeling you get when you see skinny chromoly forks on a carbon frame …

And now for the rub, and there always is! With this level of carbon engineering innovation, you can’t just whack these parts on your bike and go jump stuff … you’ve got to employ some finesse here. We now own a bicycle specific torque wrench and a tube of ‘carbon grip paste’, common in the world of high-end road and mountain bikes but not something we’ve been overly concerned with in BMX. But that’s where Supercross and Speedline are now taking us … into the world of ultra-high-end race equipment, designed for serious racers. If you’re a novice rider, new to the sport, or are not fully invested into the racing scene, these carbon sculptures are probably not for you.  Then there is the cost … deep breath … $250 for the bars alone … and you can expect the stem to be in the same ballpark, we think you’ll be looking at a hair under $220. The front end alone of our test machine now costs more than a lot of the bikes on the gate at our local track. But, the time and effort that goes into producing products at this end of the spectrum, even for a company at the forefront of the carbon technology,  comes with a significant financial investment … we’re scaling a new frontier in BMX part development here, especially when it comes to the stem.

Assembly, like we said, requires finesse … and a bit of a learning curve. Printed right there on the bars in all CAPS is the whimsical, yet stern warning … ‘YOU MUST NOT EXCEED 6nm OF TORQUE. TRUST US, WE CAN TELL’ … we eventually went to 8 … and a bit. Do not tell Supercross!

After applying a liberal amount of the Park Tool SAC-2 ‘Supergrip’ paste to the clamping surface of the Matrix stem we set our new Torque Wrench to the specified 6nm and tightened everything down. We moved the bars. We tried 8nm. Do not tell Supercross! The bars felt good, the bike felt light … we got a little overzealous down the third straight rhythm section … we moved the bars, only a fraction but they moved … slightly. 8, and a bit newton-metres. I repeat, Do not tell Supercross! The bars where now rock solid. BMX Nirvana achieved!

Back at base we had a closer look at the post track assembly and noticed an excess of ‘liquified’ paste that had oozed out. A discussion with Supercross’s Bill Ryan revelled that he had already been investigating this ooze … it appears that while liberally applying the carbon grip paste in a very hot and dry California, where it dries almost instantly, may not work the same when used in a damp, humid, northern European climate. We disassembled the bars and started again, applying a very thin layer of the Park Tool SAC-2 ‘Supergrip’ paste … and then back to 8nm of force … and a bit. Do not tell Supercross.

In our, admittedly short, time with our new carbon toys we also found that setting the stem to the desired torque level and then leaving the bike be for a period of time will allow you to return with your wrench and get the bolts a little tighter using the exact same torque. Does the carbon relax a little over time? Either way, our assembly is now bullet proof. Knowledge, experience, and a little finesse … BMX Nirvana.

The riding experience, once you conquer the irrational fear of going 100% with a full carbon cockpit, is different, it’s obviously lighter, so much lighter and it’s definitely stiffer, so much stiffer, it’s more solid … and in a strangely unquantifiable way, it somehow it feels sharper, more responsive … better.

But are these cutting-edge carbon products for you? For your kid? Well that’s not for us to say … there are too many factors to individually weigh up … are you at that level, will you benefit, can you afford them? Unfortunately for us, we’ve tried them and now there is no going back … #bmxevolved

UPDATE 14th Sept. 2020

Following on from our review of the pre-production Speedline Matrix Carbon Stem, we have been lucky enough to get our hands on the graphic artwork for the production models … and in our view, unique is an understatement!

The production stem will be a combination of meticulously painted and unpainted sections leaving half the stem and half the graphics raw, except for a clearcoat we assume, to reveal the Carbon material in all its glory.

As well as the black version shown below, which will come in both gloss and matt, the Matrix stem will also initially be available in a white, a red and an orange version … all colour options will be half colour, half carbon. We would also expect other unique and limited colour options to sporadically become available, as is the nature of the guys in Apple Valley.
